Questions To Ask Yourself When Starting A Lawn Care Business
|
1. Decide What You Want To DoLawn care is a pretty broad term that can cover plenty of tasks. So the first thing you need to do is decide what your company will do. Will you plant lawns, rake leaves, cut lawns, trim shrubs, weed flower gardens, design yard landscaping, fertilize, do pest control? Remember you can start small and expand in the future.2. Who's Your MarketYou need to target your market. What part of the city will you target? Wealthy? Middle class? Newer homes? Established yards? Once you determine what areas you will target you will better be able to decide what equipment you should invest in and how many employees you will hire.3. EquipmentYou'll need some basic tools to begin with and you can expand on those over time. Things like mowers, weedeaters, trimmers, hedge cutters, some hand tools like rakes and shovels, perhaps a small electric chainsaw. You'll also want a wheelbarrow and an old pickup truck too hall your equipment would certainly be useful. Remember that for commercial purposes you are going to want tools that you can rely on so cheap no name brands may not be the answer for this project. You'd be much better off sticking to names that have a reputation in the industry.4. EmployeesWill you hire others immediately? If so how many? Or will you go it alone at first? You'll need to decide this because if you are hiring others you will need to register as an employer for the appropriate paper work.5. Full Time or Part TimeAre you looking for a full time or part time business? Do you have another job and you just want to fill days off and earn a few extra dollars or are you looking for a full time career in landscaping? How much time you plan to devote will directly affect your bottom line. The amount of time you invest is up to you. $20,000 a month is not an unreasonable expectation and $10 million dollars a year in sales is very achievable. So stay small or grow your business big.6. Working CapitalWhere will you get the money to start your company and how much will you need. How much depends on what equipment you already have and what equipment you plan to buy. You might consider renting some of the equipment in the beginning. That way you can pay for it on an as needed basis. No matter what your expectations one thing is for certain. You can expect to make a comfortable living that will be limited only by the amount of effort you put into your business. Today's lawn business is nothing like the one of just a decade ago. In fact today it's a $20 billion dollar industry and it's a sophisticated industry. So why not get your share?
