Reasons to Recycle
|
Many people understand that recycling reduces the impact to forests and wildlife but many do not recognize just how damaging a lack of recycling can be. Recycling materials reduces the need to chop down trees, extract crude petroleum and other mineral ores. The need for these products is creating a problem in the forests that is becoming irreversible. As the forests and wetlands are diminishing, wildlife are losing their homes and either becoming less abundant or adapting their lifestyles to thrive in the city. We cannot afford to lose animals that help to ensure the delicate balance of our eco system and we also cannot have wildlife migrating from forests to cities and beginning to co-exist with humans. When this happens there is an inherent risk to both the humans and the animals. For these reasons, recycling programs should be encouraged to avoid potential problems involving human and wildlife interactions. Recycling can also reduce the amount of water pollution in our cities. Although there is some water pollution generated by processing recycled materials, it is far less than the amount of pollution generated in creating new products. Pollutants such as chlorine dioxide are used in the process of turning trees into paper and each year there are billions of gallons of this wastewater dumped into our river system affecting the integrity of our water supply. Air pollution is also greatly reduced when products are created from recycled materials as opposed to natural resources. Toxic chemicals are required in abundance to process virgin materials but the amount of chemical is reduced, and in some cases eliminated, when recycled materials are being processed. Recycling can also help us to maintain healthy lifestyles by reducing the need for incinerators. Incinerators are notorious for producing all types of air pollution and producing polluted ash. Incinerators are often located in residential neighborhoods and the pollutants and ash that they emit can be detrimental to the health of the residents. The more we recycle the less material there is that needs to be incinerated. In addition to the benefits to wildlife, natural resources and the environment, recycling also contributes to economic wealth and prosperity. Studies have shown that recycling programs create jobs and generate revenue. Additionally a city can prosper by selling their recyclables instead of letting them go to waste in a landfill. If you aren't already recycling there are so many reasons to start. Many people believe that recycling is strictly for tree huggers who are only concerned with wildlife and the environment but the truth is that we all benefit from recycling. It is true that the impacts to our forests and wildlife are reduced through recycling program but those are not the only benefits of recycling. The quality of the air we breathe and the water that we drink is greatly improved through recycling. Processing raw materials is much more toxic to our air and water supplies than processing recyclable materials. Also, the use of incinerators can cause harmful health concerns in those who live near the incinerators and breathe the contaminated air often. If all of these facts are not enough to convince you to begin recycling you might consider the financial benefits of recycling. Recycling programs create jobs and generate revenue.
