Rechargeable Batteries and Their Benefits
|
With more and more products demanding the use of batteries, it's now more important than ever to consider switching to rechargeable batteries. Not only are rechargeable less expensive than the old use and toss variety over the long run, but they are also better for the environment. Studies indicate that more than 15 million batteries are purchased, used and tossed each year. That adds up to a lot of landfill. Rechargeable batteries, also known as secondary cells, can be recharged and thus re-used even after they have been drained. By purchasing rechargeable batteries and recharging them instead of tossing them and heading out to the store to purchase new batteries, you can eliminate a lot of landfill that could ultimately end up polluting lakes and streams; proving to be a dangerous combination for our environment and our children. Studies have shown that when the chemicals contained within batteries are simply dumped, it's quite possible for them to enter city water supplies. From this point, these dangerous chemicals can then be ingested by humans as well as plants and animals which are then consumed in food products. Sadly, these studies have indicated that children and infants can receive serious health effects from these chemicals, such as learning disabilities, mental defect and even central nervous system damage. Not only are rechargeable batteries simply better for the environment and our health, but they are also much more cost effective. Some rechargeable batteries can be reused as much as 1000 times; which makes the money savings benefits patently obvious. Even though you will need to invest in a battery charger to get started, the price for a typical battery charger is quite low; starting at around $17. Considering the fact that just one battery can be reused anywhere from 500-1000 times; it's quite easy to recover the investment of a battery charger in the amount of money you will save by switching to rechargeable batteries. Estimates indicate that depending on the type of rechargeable battery you select and the power drain of the product that will use the battery, over the course of a rechargeable battery's average life span you could be able to save as much as $100 per battery. It should be noted that the amount of use you get out of the average rechargeable battery will depend on the drain of the product; therefore some types of rechargeable batteries are better recommended for some applications than others. A 1.5 volt lithium, for example, works great for high current applications whereas a 1.5 volt heavy duty is only suitable for low current applications. In addition to the money savings factor, many rechargeable batteries also have a quick recovery time and are able to easily handle high current applications. I suggest buying two packs of rechargeable batteries, so you have a spare pack to use while the other pack is charging. There's also the consideration that you can simply pop your rechargeable battery into a charger and charge it up for whatever you need, instead of having to head out to the car and make a trek across town to pick up a new package of batteries.
