Registering an internet domain name - what you actually do

When you want to get an internet domain name for a new hobby site or online business, or to reserve your own given name as a dot com, the process is very simple.

First, think of the domain name you want. Many of the registration of domain services, like Godaddy, offer various tools which will help here. You type in any name, and they will reveal whether the domain is registered already or not. If it is still free, you can get it for yourself. If it is already registered by someone else, then the internet registration service will offer you varieties of the name to think about, or you could try other suffixes, like .info or .org.

While .com names are still the most popular, the amount of traffic you will get to your new internet domain depends on your web promotion efforts and will have little to do with the domain suffix, so don't be to upset if you don't get the .com version of the name you would like.

Assuming you have discovered the name you love, and it is not already registered by another person or business, what exactly do you do now?

Having used a site like Godaddy, and having completed the search for a name and checked that it is unregistered, you will then click on a 'Proceed to Checkout' button or similar.

Next you will decide on the length of time you want to register the domain for - from a minimum of one to ten years. If you have exciting ideas for the domain name, or want it as an possible investment, go for a higher figure. If the registered domain is just for securing for the present, choose a shorter period.

Next, you have to give things like your name and email contact details. When you own a company, you can also insert the company name. This information is used for the registration of the domain - the domain name is recorded as belonging to you, for the period you have registered it for. Officially, you become the 'registrant' of the name, and no-one else can use it.

Following on with the registration, you should choose whether your registration is to be public, or protected (or 'private'). A public registration means that anyone using anything like theWhois lookup service will be able to investigate the domain name and see who owns it. Depending on the nature of the website you are going to make, you may decide paying the small amount extra for a private registration which conceals your details will be worthwhile to avoid spam or crank messages.

Now having taken your decision, you can enter your credit card or Paypal details, make the payment, and the domain becomes your own, for the period you have selected. A good registrar like Godaddy will remind you, using the contact details you registered with, when the time arrives to renew the registration of the domain.

It is just as easy as that to register a domain!
