Relocating to New York

As the most populous city in the US, New York City has a population that exceeds 8 million people. The city covers an area of approximately 321 square miles, with the greater Metropolitan area extending outward to cover a population of more than 20 million people. The City of New York is made up of five boroughs. These boroughs are Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan; each of which are quite populous by themselves. Three major islands make up the geography of New York City. These islands are Staten Island, western Long Island and Manhattan. The only borough that actually sits on the mainland of the United States is the Bronx. The public transit system is an extremely important factor within the City of New York, linking the five boroughs and making it much easier to travel from one point to the next. In fact, many residents of New York City find that it is not even necessary to own a car; as using the public transit system is much easier and more affordable than paying for fees associated with auto ownership such as parking and garage costs. New York City is well known as a true melting pot, home to immigrants hailing from almost two hundred different countries. This provides for an eclectic mix of cultures and opportunities throughout the city. As a large city in the United States, English is the official language, of course; however, there are numerous other languages spoken in the city as well. New York City has also attained a well known reputation as an important business and commerce center. Individuals who are interested in finance, real estate, insurance, journalism, publishing and mass media will find a wide range of opportunities within the New York City area. Other important sectors within the city include technology, fashion and medical research. Perhaps one of the largest sectors in the city is contained on Wall Street, where the second largest stock exchange in the entire world is located, the New York Stock Exchange. A large number of Fortune 500 company corporations are headquartered nearby; making New York City an important location for numerous employers. The city is also home to a large percentage of foreign private sector jobs. While there is no doubt that New York City certainly provides a host of employment and cultural opportunities, there are a few environmental issues related to living in such a crowded city that persons who are interested in relocating to New York City should be aware of prior to making a final decision. One of the most important factors that individuals considering a move to the City of New York should be aware of is related to high amount of air pollution. In some persons, the high levels of air pollution can lead to extended problems associated with asthma. In terms of safety, many people find themselves concerned with the crime rate of New York City; however, individuals considering a move to the City of New York might be surprised to learn that the crime rate in the city has actually decreased over the last fifteen years or so.
