Repair or Replace A Worn Hot Tub Pump?

A good hot tub will give you little grief over the years but at some point you will probably have to del with a worn hot tub pump. The question is do you repair or replace?

The water in your hot tub flows through the tub through the heating element, then the filter system, and back into the tub. This is accomplished with the use of a pump that keeps the water flowing.

The pump has moving parts which means that inevitably at some point in its life it will begin to fail or completely quit. Parts do wear out. When this happens you will need to decide whether it is wiser to repair the existing pump or to replace it.

If you are a handy man and are able to take apart, replace the worn parts, and then put the pump back together repairing the pump might be a smart move and save you some money.

But for many of us the idea of taking the pump apart let alone rebuilding it can be a bit daunting and we would need to take it to a professional. In this case it may be more cost effective to replace the pump as labor costs can quickly add up.

And even if you are able to repair the pump yourself you may take it apart only to find out the worn parts will cost you as much as an entire new pump. Sadly this happens far too often. It then doesnt make sense to do a repair when a new pump will cost you less overall.

Normally you will get some warning signs that all is not right with your pump and that failure is imminent. If you start to hear a whining sound that is either constant or intermittent this is a sign that your pump is getting old and that the bearings are worn. Replacing them is expensive and you will be much better off just replacing the pump.

You might also hear a low pitched humming sound and reduced water flow. This usually is a sign that the motor is not turning properly. It can be a frozen shaft, seized bearings, or broken or jammed propeller, or just wear and tear from age.

If there are water puddles under the pump it is likely that the water seals are worn away. This is actually a very easy and cheap repair.

If you determine that you need to replace the pump the good news is that it is relatively affordable. In fact compare to the price of a hot tub its pretty darn cheap.

You can find replacement pumps for as little as $100 and averaging around $300 depending on the size, style, and type of pump. They are available with either a side or center discharge tube. Be sure to match up with your original pump.

A hot tub pump doesnt have to break your budget. Its one of those repairs that dont bother you too much and its essential to the use of your hot tub.
