Restoring Hardwood Floors - Is It Right For You?

All hardwood floors have the capability of being an artistic wonder that is unmatched in the world we live in today. Hardwood floors gleam with the beauty and the grace that the owner has imbued them with. However, there comes a time when everyone who has ever owned a hardwood floor will tell you that it is time for a little restorative work. Restoring hardwood floors is a journey down the unusual, but rewarding world of hardwood flooring.

Usually, when people begin a restore project, they get overwhelmed by the choices that are out there. I would like to be the first to say that simply adding a new layer of varnish and/or finish is not a restore of your hardwood floors. That is comparative to sweeping the garbage under the rug and calling the floor clean because you can not see the garbage anymore. Of course, this may be fine and dandy for some people. However, most people want to seriously consider restoring hardwood floors in their home or office for the added elegance they know they got for a job well done.

When carpet became popular in the 60s, many hardwood floors were covered with this new fad item. Of course, that beautiful hardwood floor was covered usually with thousands of staples, nails, screws, and glue. Is it possible to save your hardwood floor? Only you can truly discover that answer. Peel back the carpet or linoleum. Take a good look at the damage done to the hardwood floor. Do you think it is repairable? If you think there is indeed a chance, then that hardwood floor may indeed be savable.

When you pull up that carpet or linoleum, you will see the true extent of the damage done. There will probably be lots of stains from pets and spilt food and drink. These usually have soaked into the wood and will require replacement planks. Finding a hidden area with the same planks is a dream come true. Usually, you can find these replacement planks in closets or pantries. This is a great way to get inexpensive replacement planks. Of course, you may be able to find similar planks sold by retailers or wholesalers. This will depend on the type, color, shade, and make of the wood planks used for that hardwood floor.

Hardwood floors have a tendency to squeak with age. Usually, people not knowing the true beauty underneath - or just not caring - drilled nails or screws through the hardwood floor into the beams. This can be an inconvenience at best. There are times that literally thousands of items such as nails, staples, or screws have been removed from hardwood flooring underneath an ugly green carpet that is a reject from the 60s. You will need to pull out those bothersome accessories and gander at the work you have ahead of you.

Restoring hardwood floors will require you to sand, stain, and finish the hardwood below. If you think that it is possible to save the ancient hardwood flooring underneath, then by all means, get busy. However, if you think you would save money and time by simply replacing the old hardwood flooring with new hardwood flooring, then ripping up the old and starting over is just as viable a solution to those old hardwood floors.
