Marketers these days are very smart. They know exactly what group to target when it comes to retail shopping. The young group that usually consists of teenagers and young adults are called Generation Y. The youth are usually targeted by trendy and cool items of the moment. Retail stores usually attract the young generation by using bright colors, playing their kind of music, selling styles they would be attracted to. Generation Y are also known to have disposable income, which is money collected from allowances, jobs, etc. and they don't have to pay bills. So, they are the largest group that are willing spend money. Generation X is also known as the IKEA babies. Why the nickname IKEA babies? People in the mid twenties to mid thirties are attracted to IKEA furniture because it is modern, colorful and makes a statement. People around that age are attracted to living in a comfortable, yet stylish lifestyle. They like to shop at retailers that offer the latest and stylish trends. They also like to be served and treated with excellent customer service. Marketers and retailers have to be very careful when handling the Generation X group. The Jones Generation consists of mid thirties to late forties age group, they tend to like to get things quickly and they don't often have time. They are also known as experimenters and they like new and interesting ideas. When retailers deal with the Jones Generation, they have to be constantly trying to keep them entertained. The Baby Boomers are the age group that has the most money and marketers and retailers love targeting this fifty age group. Baby boomers often do not have time, which is why they hire people do their ordinary work, such as cooking, landscaping and such. They love to spend and give themselves lavish gifts, such as a boat cruise for the weekend. This age group is the most favored when retailers try to target them. For people over sixty years old, they are known as the Greying tigers, they love to spend their time at home doing home improvement projects, and retailers who are in home improvement have the advantage. There are also active Greying tigers hat love to explore and socialize, they like golfing, vacationing and admiring the arts. When you are trying to target a certain age group, keep it mind all the characteristics of each one. Here's an overview: Generation Y: young and dynamic, they are attracted to trendy items, Generation X love modern and stylish items, Baby Boomers have the most money, but do not have time. Greying tigers love to spend time on home repairs or traveling. It is difficult to aim for all age groups, so it is best to try to cater to the age group that you think you can sell to. I suggest changing up the music everyday, so you are able to attract a wider consumer base. Have coupons and special offers days or donations to certain causes to attract older age groups. When targeting Greying tigers, be sure to make you're the text of your signs bigger, so they are able to see from a distance. To keep up with each group's currents likes and preferences, I suggest you update yourself by reading many magazines from all different age groups. This way, you have the knowledge of what a certain age groups want at that time, which can give you a competitive advantage over other retail stores. Remember to always update your retail store displays with eye catching designs to attract customers into your store. About The Author: Jason Petrina is the Editor and Publisher of Article Click.
