Review of Major Airlines

Airports have never been a favorite place of the majority of people in the world. In fact, going to the airport - whether you are scheduled for a flight, or picking someone up or dropping them off - is typically a major pain. In view of the added security measures put into place since September 11, 2001, a trip to the airport is even more difficult than it was in the past.

As consumers, we expect to be treated well by companies. Companies treat us well because we have other choices, and they want to keep our business. This isn't always so when it comes to Airlines, however. Most airlines only serve specific areas, and sometimes, one airline is the only one to serve a specified region. Since our choices are limited, the airlines don't have to cater to us quite so much - but some still try to keep us happy.

American Airlines is probably one of the most well known airlines. It is also the worlds largest. This airline serves 154 cities in North America, The Caribbean, South America, Europe, and other Pacific countries. American serves approximately 85 million passengers each year. American airline flights are usually dependable, but the food service, as well as the overall friendliness of the flight attendants needs a great deal of improvement. Cutbacks have greatly affected the remaining staff, and the main problem seems to be that they are overworked.

US Airways has excellent ground service in most cases. The staff is polite and helpful, and things often go without a hitch. In flight, however, problems seem to arise. The food is often lousy, and if you have special dietary needs and pre-order special meals, those requests may or may not be fulfilled. Flights are often delayed, and when those flights are delayed for long periods of time, meal vouchers don't arrive very quickly - if at all. The restrooms on the planes are often not maintained as they should be. It seems that lost luggage is becoming a common problem at US Airways, so if you have valuables, ship them to your destination through UPS instead of trusting them to the baggage departments at US Airways.

United Airlines has friendly ground service, but the in flight service is nothing to brag about. The best thing about the flight is the free movies, according to most passengers. From there, however, it goes downhill. Often, there is a food shortage, and not everyone gets a meal. However, the meals on long United Airlines flights seem to be better than the food served on other airlines. The planes and facilities are clean in most cases, which cannot be said of all airlines. United Airlines offers an Economy Plus deal, which gets you more leg room. The regular coach seats are very crowded - as they are on most airplanes in all airlines.

Consumers are slowly gaining more choices when it comes to airlines. Today, many 'rogue' airlines have opened for business, and their prices and service offer real competition to the major airlines. The only reason consumers don't use them more is because they don't have the advertising budgets of the major airlines.

The most common problems seen with most major airlines are overbooking, and the continuing increase in ticket prices. While the increase in price may be attributed to rising fuel costs, overbooking is another matter. It doesn't make sense to consumers to pay top dollar for tickets, only to be told upon arrival that they can't get on the flight because it was overbooked. Airlines have done nothing to remedy this situation, and it only continues to get worse.

Another common problem with most of the major airlines is the food, or the food service. But airline food has never been very desirable. If possible, avoid it. If you can't avoid it, try to bring along your own snacks or sandwiches for the flight, if the airline allows this.
