Rifle Scope Mounts



Too often sportsmen don't realize how important choosing a quality rifle scope mount is and instead they cheap out only to pay the price later. There are plenty of affordable rifle scope mounts available so choose wisely.

No matter the age of your rifle generally they have a wide tolerance on any components that are relevant. For example a � 0.5 mm height difference of between the front and back in a 100 meters will cause a .5m deviation in the shot.

It is very important that there is not tension on and that your scope is fitted properly with the proper adjustability. Modern weapons have an excellent tolerance but why waste shot because of a mismatch.

If you have a 2 piece base they aren't usually interchangeable and you should torque the screws to an inch pound setting. Don't over tighten because they are tiny and they can be stripped easily.

It is important to choose a quality steel base for your rifle mount. The best is a one or two piece steel base and the steel rings. A one piece base is stronger but if you are mounting on a .22 then the light aluminum rings and two part bases are just fine.

Then again if you are mounting a huge scope on your.338 the heavy recoil would sheer the mounts off if they weren't strong enough.

A rimfire scope and most pistols come pre drilled for your scope mount and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding the right rings and bases to mount your scope.

Scopes have different diameters so you will need to buy the ring size that is correct for your scope. You will also need to choose the proper height. The taller rings need to be able to clear the barrel.

You'll need to mount and bore sight your rifle. A solid foundation is important to ensure a solid functional mount. After all an improper mount will be of no use to you and there's nothing worse than seeing your game get away.
