Rifle Scopes: How to Pick the Best

If you are going to get a scope for your rifle you definitely want to get the best one available, and it can be hard to choose from the many rifle scopes that are available. You can help to make this difficult decision if you decide why you need the scope. You may want to be a more accurate shot, or you may want to be able to shoot at a longer range than before. You also may want to be able to identify your target better before you shoot it. All of these answers can help you decide what rifle scope is the best one for you. When you are going to buy a scope for your rifle there are some considerations to remember. You want to consider the price of the scope, how durable it is, what power settings it offers, what adjustments can be made, how it works in various lighting, and the accessories that come with it. Keep these all in mind when you are picking out a rifle scope.

Considering the PricePrice is an important consideration when you are choosing from the vast amount of rifle scopes available for purchase. You can find scopes that cost as little as $100 and the price goes up from there. Usually to get a decent scope you will have to pay from $500 to $1500 for it. Usually a good way of considering a price to pay for a scope is to pay about the same for a scope that you did for the gun you are purchasing it for. You can find great scopes in a variety of different price ranges, so you need to decide before you go shopping for a new scope what you can spend, and then look for the best scope in that price range. Remember, that while you will get what you pay for, you can find quality for a good price.

How durable is the scope?Another consideration when you are looking for the best rifle scope is the durability of the scope. While you should take good care of your guns and your scopes, chances are that at some point your gun and scope are going to take a little abuse. Your gun could get accidentally dropped, kicked, or knocked over. You need to be sure that the scope you choose will hold up if it gets a little abused. If your gun does get knocked over or dropped you will need to make sure that your adjustments are all ok. Sometimes you may need to reset some adjustments that may have been jarred on your gun. When you buy your scope you should test the adjustments and you should be able to shoot a square with it if they are set right. You can do this test by shooting two shots at a target, then moving the scope left by ten clicks and shooting two more. Next you will move it up by ten clicks and shoot two more shots. Then you should move it to the right by ten clicks and shoot two more shots. Lastly you move it down by ten clicks and shoot your last two shots. These last two shots that you make should end up very close to the first two shots you made. If they do not you may have to take your scope back.

What power settings do you need? The power settings of rifle scopes are very important as well. What power setting you will need will depend on what you are using the scope for. You need to decide how well you need to be able to view your target. If you are shooting at game that may only be about 100 yards away from you it is much different than shooting a target in the Iraqi desert that may be 1000 yards or even more away from you. If you want to see the target at short distances and you do not need great detail you can get away with getting a power setting of about 10-14x. If you need to tell the difference between two people at a great distance then you may need a power setting that goes up to 20x. If you can see your target better you will be able to accurately place the crosshairs where you want them to ensure the best shot. If you have a low caliber rifle you will not need as much power because of the shorter range that they often have.

Making adjustments. If you are using a scope there will be various adjustments that you may have to make, and you will need to consider what kind of adjustments you will need to make with your scope before you purchase one. Some scopes allow you to make adjustments by hand, and other rifle scopes require that you use tools to make these adjustments. If you need to make adjustments quickly you will want to be able to make them by hand. You can get scopes that have different increments of adjustments. Some scopes will adjust by MOA (minutes of angle), while some will adjust at 1/2MOA increments, and others at 1 MOA increments. You will need to decide what you need for the kind of shooting you will be doing.

LightingYou will also need to consider what kind of lighting you will be using your scope in when you are looking for the best one for you and your gun. Some people like illuminated scopes that help them to shoot well in low light. If you are hunting strictly in the daytime, you will not need this feature on your scope. If you are hunting at night, or using your scope for military or police use you may need to be able to see your target well even at night. You can also get scopes that offer night vision so you can clearly see at night. You will have to decide what you need, depending on what you use your scope to do.

Accessories for your scope.Rifle scopes also come with various different accessories. You can get scope covers, bases, and rings for your scope as well. You need to decide what kind of accessories you want and that will help you decide what scope to get. Consider the quality of accessories as well as the quality of the scope when you are making a purchase.

If you keep in mind all of these considerations you will be able to make an informed definition on what scope is for you. Asking yourself what you will use the scope for will help you determine what durability, adjustments, lighting options, and accessories you may need. You can use this information to help you pick the right scope for you out of all the many rifle scopes that are available.
