Romans Scams - How To Avoid Online Scams

Many times, you may have heard the expression “If it is too good to be true, than it is." You also may have seen it returning a true value when you heard about internet scams with many victims, even when it is about romance. Some people with bad intentions use the internet as a tool to get to lonely people that can be convinced in doing things that they would naturally be aware of. For instance, only in Great Britain, many men and women have been scammed into losing about £1 billion in a single year from fake romance.

These con artists choose online dating services and chat rooms for their playground. There are many sites out there and many of them do not require fees for membership and they do not screen their members, so scammers can be hiding in this crowd. This is the place where a scammer gets in to play by choosing a victim and swiping her or him of their feet with grand words like “soul mate" and “romance". They actually want only to make some easy money.

This sounds disappointing. How can you know if the person you talk to in a chat room really cares about you or is a scammer? It is quite hard as some scammers invest time and effort into besieging their victim.

Even so, some signs can be identified easily to know you have a scammer circling you. They usually ask for money to meet you. Of course, they do not simply throw the questions, they present serious reasons, like the fact that they are poor or that they need cash for being able to enter your country, or that they have been robbed, or they are ill from a serious disease, and so on and so forth. Your good heart tells you to help them. And then, not a big surprise, they do not have a bank account and they ask you to send the money through a money transfer agent like Western Union.

Another sign is that the pictures with your would be soul mate are like those taken for a fashion show or a beauty magazine. But when you try to contact them via other communication systems, besides internet, like through the phone, something happens and you never get in touch with them. You will also know when you have a scammer on the line, when you will notice how they delay answers and do not really pay attention to what you are saying. This happens because they “work" with many people in the same time.

It is important to protect yourself and your money from such individuals. So, be careful and do not disclose any personal details, like home phone number, work address, to the person you met on a dating site. Also, a good preventive method is to stay away from the free sites where the scammers lurk and go for those with a good reputation. As about the person trying to contact, avoid those that try to get in touch with you even if you already told them that you are not interested. Ask some questions and if they respond evasively, then you know who you are dealing with. If you have been scammed, the bad news is you do not have much to do to get your money back. You can report the person that did that to you to the site administrators, but that, usually, does not lead to much of a resolution.
