Rotties - Learn the Basics about this Breed

A Rottweiler is a large breed of dog and they are commonly called Rotties. There are very distinct characteristics of this particular type of dog - they are very lean and muscular with a large head. They are also athletic in nature so they are extremely fast runners. They have very sharp teeth which is what also makes them dangerous because they will attack if they feel that they or their owner is in danger. Rotties are extremely loyal dogs as well as highly intelligent. Most of them have their tails cut when they are puppies and their back claws are removed.

They are common dogs for breeding due to the demand for them. A female Rottie can have up to a dozen puppies per litter. The coloring for Rotties range from various shades of brown and black. A rare trait is found in those that have a reddish tint to them. There are some different varieties in their stature and coloring depending on what part of the world they live in. For example German Rotties are much shorter than those in the United States.

Most breeders work hard to keep the characteristics of the Rotties that will be accepted by the AKC though. They know there is more money to be made with offering puppies that have such characteristics. There are some common misconceptions about Rotties and their temperament. For the most part they are very calm dogs and you can easily train them to do a variety of things. They are very protective towards their owners and they will fight to their own death.

The problem comes in when Rotties are bred to be mean and aggressive as that is what they will become. It is not their nature to be that way with proper training and a loving home. Yet stories of a person being attacked by a Rottie are very common and they give people the wrong impression. Most people that own Rotties will tell you they are very loving and fun dogs to have around.

They are often used as guard dogs because people are indeed intimidated by their appearance. They are also extremely smart which is why they are also classified as working dogs. It isn't uncommon to find Rotties in the military and within police departments. Those that will be used for such a purpose need to start their training at a very young age. They will take on a leadership role if they are trained well from the start.

Rotties are a breed of dog that need companionship so make sure you have plenty of time for one. By instinct they are going to form a pack so if you have other dogs expect your Rottie to be the leader of them. If no other dogs are around then they will form a very strong alliance to their owner. Yet it is important to show Rotties you are the leader from the very start so that they won't dominate you or other members of the family.

Full grown Rotties can weigh from 85 to 115 pounds. They will have a very long life expectancy of 10 to 12 years if they are well cared for. A proper diet and plenty of exercise will prevent them from being overweight. They tend to eat more than they need to if it is in front of them so talk to your veterinarian about how much to offer your Rotties each day.
