Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen

It's elaborately symmetrical and is obviously man-made, but Hannover in Northwestern Germany is world renowned for this lovely attraction- the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, also known as the Herrenhäuser Gärten. Consisting of four large landscaped gardens, the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen was once the highlight in every court festivity held in Hannover.

Grosser Garten (Great Garden), the first of the three magnificent gardens, is designed similar to an outdoor hall. The parquet circle is lined with ornamental, precisely-cut trees and the garden itself presents over 30,000 different summer flower varieties. Sandstone sculptures add luster to the surroundings, with Venus overlooking the paths and Hercules guarding the garden's centre. The Berggaten was originally a kitchen garden, where fresh fruits and vegetables were grown for the royal family's use. But, it was later developed into a garden with rare species grown by the loving hands of Electress Sophie, who was passionate about gardens and began redesigning these royal gardens upon her permanent royal residence in Hannover. The Georgengarten was redesigned in the mid 19th century and is now an English landscaped garden. Welfengarten is now the property of the University of Hannover and is not strictly considered to be part of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen.

All baroque era gardens are famous for their tree-lined paths, neatly potted plants and detailed fountains. But the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen is among the most notable for elaborate structuring. The Grand Fountain is 82 metres tall and is the largest fountain in any European garden. The Grand Cascade was built sometime around 1670 and stands proud even today. The once beautifully designed artificial grotto was converted into a temple and is a core attraction in the gardens. The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen is also famed for it's large outdoor theatre, the first of its kind in Germany. Its opulent figures contribute to the garden's enchanting and other-worldly atmosphere.

The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen was built during the Guelph dynasty and still preserves its historic qualities while blending in perfectly with the modern environment. The gardens come alive during spring and summer festivals, especially the Herrenhausen Festival Week.
