SKS Scope Mount Options

There are many different mounts available that provide accuracy at an affordable price. So what SKS scope mount options do you have?

1. Receiver Cover Type MountAlthough functional this is not one of the better designs that SKS. It is a very easy design to install but when it comes to accuracy they've certainly done better. And as far as I'm concerned there is just way too much play on the back and forth movement of this one.

Try it for yourself. Remove the bolt, recoil spring, and bolt carrier and the replace the receiver cover and lock it down and check the amount of play - not good! It shows this isn't a very stable platform at all.

That said it does stay in place safely. It is just not a constant pressure and thus the receiver parts move during use of the firearm.

2. Receiver Cover Type Mount With ScrewsThis is the above mount but with screws that go below the receiver cover. The intent was to tighten things up which in fact it does which rests our case about the above having too much play.

The biggest concern is that the screws leave marks on the receiver and although you might think it's not good it actually is because each time you can tighten the screws in the exact same spot which lets you get set up in a fraction of the time. No messing around.

3. Rear Sight Scout Type MountThis mount uses a LEF or long eye relief and it is a nice stable scope base. You do however have to remove the scope each time you want to clean the gas tube which is a bit of a pain.

4. Drill And Tap Type MountThis is difficult scope to mount but you get good accuracy time after time and it is permanently attached so you only have to mess around once. In case the name didn't give it away with a drill and tap mount you drill holes, tap the hole, and install the mount. It stays put forever.

There are two different types of drill and tap mounts. The ATI or K Mount and the Choate Machine and Tool. With the K Mount it is difficult to remove the bolt and bolt carrier with it installed which is a bit of a pain cause you always tend to land up stripping screws. Yet it needs to be removed to be cleaned so you don't have a great deal of options here.

Of the four different SKS scope mount styles the drill and tap mount is probably your best option followed by the Receiver Cover Type with Screws. Of course a scope mount is about as personal as a scope so you'll have to make the final decision.
