For people who want to preserve the inherent color of the wood that it has when they buy their furniture, it is a common practice to use a teak sealant. They often use it to darken it up a little as well. Applying a teak sealant to your furniture will do more than just help to darken it up, it will also provide a UV protection and an anti-fungicide which will keep mold from developing. Whether you're teak furnishings is aged or whether it is new doesn't genuinely matter, you can place a teak sealants on any piece after it has been cleaned. This isn't the same thing as varnishing your furniture. All it does is act as a preservative for the wood while still allowing it to breathe and release its inherent oils. This application is not going to peel or bubble up on you like glaze will. These items both help to defend and stain your wood the color that you like. The darker the stain that you get, the better UV protection you are going to give your furnishings, which means less applications in the future. If any unfortunate circumstance you already have a piece of teak furniture that has been varnished, you will need to sand all of that old lacquer off and then either leave it organic or put on a stain. Applying a preservative to your teak wood furniture is pretty straightforward. Make sure that you apply the preservative to the furniture during the summer time months when it has been sitting in the sun for a long time and all of the grains are opened up. You should apply the first coat by spraying it liberally and then rubbing it in with a rag. Try to make sure that you apply two coats in this fashion on all surfaces of the wood top, bottom, sides and between any slats. If you are applying the stain on any surface that you care about, then you need to make sure that you put something under your wood as you don't want to cause stain damage to anything you care about.You will need to apply the stain yearly after it has been washed with a mild detergent and water, but only to the surfaces that gets on After doing this to your furnishings you really have to do very little else to defend it. You could wash the furnishings every once in a while a soap and water which will help to remove any normal soiling. It is important that you be careful and try not to spill things like coffee, wine or other staining foods, as these items can and will penetrate the sealant and leave a stain. If you want to improve your furnishings and resistance to these types of stains you can put on a teak clear coat. Because of the inborn oils and teak, it is pretty much impervious to water. Because of this, things like varnish, water sealers, and products with an oil base aren't recommended for this type of furnishings. If you do you can be assured that it will chip and peel off. This can truly make a piece of beautiful furnishings ugly. It isn't a good idea to put oil on your teak furnishings either, as it has plenty of its own, and it will just end up creating a mold problem on your piece of furnishings. This again causes more work for you as you will need to wash the furniture with bleach and soap and then sand the surface. If you enjoy spending time outdoors relaxing, then purchasing a piece of teak wood furniture is an excellent investment. Teak furniture helps to accentuate any yard and make it look classy and nice.
