Safety Mowing Tips

Lawnmowers are owned by almost every household and they are used on a regular basis. They are very widespread and are used by even elementary students mowing grass as a summer job. They are actually quite dangerous and should be used with precaution, approximately 230 000 people are injured in lawnmower related accidents in a yearly basis. Lawnmower related injuries may include severed fingers, cuts, loss of blood, broken bones, or eye related problems caused by flying debris. Edger's resemble lawnmowers and have the same common dangers. When using an edger be sure to be as careful with it as a lawnmower.

A very common lawnmower injury is caused from the larger riding style lawn mowers. It is often the case that adults allow children to ride with them while they are cutting the grass. If the child slips and falls they may be victim to the sharp blades of the lawnmower. It is not a joke to have fingers cut from a lawnmower, it is better to be safe then sorry. Lawnmower injuries can vary greatly and may be very difficult to heal from due to their awkward blades. They can result in nerve damage or even a loss of an arm or leg; I want to reiterate that lawnmowers should only be operated by adults.

The sad aspect about lawnmower related injuries is that they are often all preventable. By simply handling the lawnmower with care and acting responsibly a lawnmower can pose no threat to you or any bystanders. Even if an injury is minor there may be long term physiological effects which may require therapy. Therapy is only needed primarily with younger children. Approximately a quarter of all lawnmower accidents involve hands, this is because when removing debris the engine is usually left on. Remember that when the lawnmower is turned off, the blades take time to stop.

The best way to avoid lawnmower related accidents is to be familiar with your lawnmower. To do this simply read the owner's manual and don't be afraid to consult it if you are unsure about any aspects of your lawnmower. Lawnmowers are all built different so do not assume you can go from one lawnmower to another. Sparkplugs are sometimes in different places, gas tanks are built differently, starters are different, and even the controls are different. Do not assume you can use someone else's lawnmower simply because you can use your own.

When mowing the lawn, try to minimize all possible distractions. Before starting the lawnmower, clear the field of debris. This includes any gardening tools, spare trash, cans, and any hard objects that may damage the blades. Also, when using the lawnmower keep all small children and pets indoors. Minimizing all distractions will increase your focus and you will be less likely to get into an accident.

To increase your safety when cutting grass either with a grass trimmer, edger, or lawnmower, make sure you do not have any loose clothing or hair. You should also try to wear closed toe shoes as a safety procedure. Some lawnmowers are very industrial and may require ear plugs to avoid any type of deafening. Avoid using your lawnmower or edger with a portable music player which may cause distractions.
