Savannah Georgia A City Rich In History And Culture



Savannah Georgia is a city that has plenty to see and do and it’s a great place to spend some time exploring. It’s a city rich in history and culture and from the moment you enter you’ll be transported back in time.

Savannah was lucky enough to avoid major damage during the War of 1812 and the Civil war. What was destroyed was reconstructed and today it stands proud rich with southern culture. Here you’ll not only find history and culture dating back, you’ll also find architecture and tradition.

Discover the black heritage, ghosts, huge old houses, and the Civil War era still alive. Margaret Mitchell the author of “Gone With the Wind,” fondly describes Savannah as “the gently mannered city by the sea.” And it’s ever so fitting.

There’s an eclectic mix of day and night here. When the sun goes down the nocturnal life begins with cigar bars, piano bars, salsa club,s as well as jazz and blues clubs. Music is a big part of the culture here. Home to Johnny Mercer’s a Savannah boy who’s hits included Autumn Leaves and Moon River.

By day you can enjoy the warm sun on the tranquil beach at Tybee Island, do some deep sea fishing or just soak up the rays. You might even want to do some exploring of the river front or how about a nice game of golf?

There are an amazing number of things to do here while you enjoy that southern hospitality. Why not start with a visit to the Fort Steward Museum where you’ll find the largest collection of weapons that have been captured from the Iraqi militants as well as exhibits from the 24th Infantry Division. It’s quite an interesting display.

Then be sure to stop by the Andrew Low House which was built in 1848 and where General Robert E. Lee stayed as a guest. The home was owned by Juliette Gordon Low who started the first American Girl Scout Troop. Upon her death in 1927 the National Society turned it into a museum of sorts.

The 4 story Chatham County Jail was erected back in 1887 and was considered the most humane jail of its time. It had a total of 118 cells, as well as a crime lab and an infirmary. It remained an active jail until 1976 when it became a preservation project. It’s definitely one of the stops you shouldn’t miss!

The Civil Rights Museum shows the progress of Savannah from past to present. It’s an educational experience that every visitor should experience from an era so rich in history.

Davenport House was built around 1815 complete with a cantilever spiral staircase and it is considered one of the greatest Georgian homes of the time. It has been restored to reflect the lifestyle of the middle class back in 1820. It’s a charming home that certainly helps you understand the culture of the area.

The Historic and Victorian Districts will greet you with trees draped in moss, flower entrances, and cobblestone streets. It’s like being transported back in time. This original city is now found within the more modern city and encompasses around 20 blocks. It’s an experience of a lifetime so don’t miss it.

There is so much history and culture here that the only true way to experience it is to come for a visit. You’ll be greeted with southern hospitality like no other and you’ll take home memories of a lifetime. So are you ready to experience what Savannah has to offer?
