1. Same Number - If keeping your existing number is important you’ll want to be sure to ask if this is possible. With some companies it’s no problem while with other they must assign a new number from their own number banks.

2. DSL - If you use DSL as your internet access if you are switching to another carrier that will provide both local and long distance you’ll need to make sure they support your high speed DSL connection.

3. Get Quote - When you ask for a quote be sure that the quote is for the entire month’s bill and not just for the unlimited long distance portion. Remember there will also be taxes added to that bill. Make sure any additional fees such as a 911 fee are included. Get the total so you aren’t going to have a big surprise at the end of the month.

4. Maintenance - Find out if the unlimited long distance plan includes wire and service maintenance. If you have trouble with your phone will they send a service person? If not find out what this cost would be should you need their services.

5. What Countries Covered - Find out if the unlimited long distance plan covers calls outside the originating country. Most don’t. If it does not find out what the charges are to dial other countries that you commonly would call. In the US you also need to find out if Hawaii and Alaska are included in your unlimited long distance

6. Talk A Minute - Find out if there is a maximum number of minutes that are included in the unlimited long distance and what the charge is per minute after you reach that maximum. So for example perhaps the first 1000 minutes are included in the flat fee but after that you’d pay.

7. How Long - Some companies run specials offering unlimited long distance but the rates are only good for a month or so. Find out if this is the permanent charge or if the rate will change shortly. If it will change find out what the new rate is.

8. VOIP - Voip is the latest technology for long distance calling. In fact it makes it free. This technology uses your computer internet connection and you can talk using a headphone and mike or by purchasing a telephone with the correct adapter. This service may or may not provide local calling for you. Check with the provider. It’s very new and very high tech and it will change the way long distance is done in the future.

When choosing a new long distance carry just make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Some of these plans sound great but at the end of the day they may not any better than what you currently have. Long distance has become a very competitive market so with some shopping you are certain to find a great deal!
