Schramm Air Compressor Buying Guide

There are all kinds of compressors on the market and that includes a full line of Schramm compressors. It can give you a headache trying to sort through all your options and that's why we've provided you with the Schramm air compressor buying guide.

We'll give you a quick review of what your options are so when you are busy shopping you'll know all the terminology and be able to know exactly what it is you want and need.

1. Piston CompressorsHave a tank that stores the air. When the tank reaches a specific level the motor shuts off and as the air is used the pressure begins to drop and the motor starts back up to rebuild the pressure to the designated level. You can adjust what that level will be based on your requirements.

2. Single Stage Piston CompressorsThis compressor has only one piston that creates all the compressed air that will be stored in the tank. It is usually only used on compressors designed for light duty and it has a maximum rating of 150 pounds or less per square inch. This compressor is adequate for almost all home uses.

3. Two Stage Piston CompressorsThis compressor has tow pistons that create all the compressed air that will be stored in the tank. The first piston compresses the air pushing it back through a check valve to the second piston which fill compress the air further delivering it to the tank. This system is usually used on commercial units.

4. Compact Air CompressorsThese are the smallest units on the market and they re also very light weight. There are no storage tanks on these units so they run continuously supplying air directly to the air tool.

5. Horsepower - How Many PoniesYou are probably familiar with this term from your car. The HP or horsepower is given a horsepower rating of how many hp the compressor's motor produces. This number will generally range from 1hp to 10 hp. Of course there are higher ratings which are generally called for in commercial applications. The higher the horsepower the greater the PSI and the greater the workload the compressor is capable of.

6. Compressor Storage TanksThese are rated in gallons and the larger tanks can store more air at higher pressures. The amount of air a compressor is able to deliver is measure in cubic feet per minute or CFM. The CFM varies at different PSI levels. Air tools have a specific requirement for both pressure and volume so know what your needs are.

Your compressor will need to have a regular maintenance schedule once a year. More often if the use is heavy. It can be done by yourself or you can have a local technician take care of the problem. What's really important to the operation of your compressor is to not neglect doing the maintenance. The few dollars you save will cost you ten fold in breakdowns. It just doesn't pay to be cheap.

Follow this buying guide and your Schramm air compressor will provide you with years of trouble free operation.
