Scrapbooking can be a great way to preserve memories of family events and special occasions. While keeping photo albums has been popular since photography became widely available to the general public, scrapbooking has only become a widely practiced hobby in the last few years. If you haven’t worked with a scrapbook yet, you might be tempted to think that it’s merely a matter of pasting photos in a pretty photo album; however the art of scrapbooking can be quite complex. Beginners to scrapbooking often find that taking a introduction to scrapbooking class provides a great way to learn the many intricacies of this hobby. These classes are generally offered at many art and craft supply stores; however, a number of retail stores dedicated soley to the art of scrapbooking have popped up in recent years and classes are typically offered at these sites as well. When you are new to scrapbooking it can be overwhelming to see the wide variety and diversity of scrapbooking supplies available. While you will need a few basic supplies to get started scrapbooking there’s no need to spend a fortune when you are just starting out. A few basic supplies will help you to get started just fine and you can acquire other supplies later on. Some of the basic supplies you will need include scissors, pens/markers, adhesive, templates and paper. You will, of course, also need a scrapbook in which to preserve your scrapbooked pages once they are complete. When purchasing scissors you will need a good sturdy pair of craft scissors but you will also quickly note that there is a wide variety of specialty scissors available specifically for scrapbooking purposes. Most of these scissors are designed to produce specific cuts and shapes when you cut cardstock or a piece of paper. They are relatively inexpensive per pair but it can be costly to purchase the many different styles available. When first starting out you might consider purchasing only one or two pairs that you like most or investigating the purchase of a pack that contains a variety of designs. The latter can be a very affordable option. In terms of pens and markers, you may already have several on hand at home that will suffice just fine as you are starting out. The main key here is to have a variety of colors to add interest to your pages. There are many different ways that you can adhere both embellishments and photos to your scrapbook pages. One is by using traditional glue; however this can be messy and may not present a very neat look. Glue sticks work somewhat better, especially if you use the kind that is made especially for scrapbooking. Another option is to use double-sided tape. The beautiful designs of most scrapbooked pages are produced using templates that allow you to cut pictures to specific shapes as well as cut out interesting shapes and frames from cardstock and paper. Templates are relatively inexpensive and can usually be purchased in multi-packs. You will also need a variety of colored and print paper. While there is almost an infinite amount of styles and designs available, the best option for most beginners is to purchase a multi-pack of different color solid papers and then purchase pages as they need them for specific projects. Finally, you may find that the purchase of a scrapbooking instructional booklet can provide useful tips when first learning to scrapbook. A tote that is specially designed for scrapbooking tools and supplies can also be a handy addition to keep everything organized and in one place.
