Secret Car Insurance You Should Know About
|
In Missouri, for example, every insurance company has to give you (for a price) a minimum of$25,000 coverage. The problem is $25,000 is not enough! This type of coverage kicks in when you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured driver. A common scenario is that an insured driver suffers devastating injuries because an uninsured driver hit him. This can result in mounting medical bills and lost time - and money - from work. To collect in this situation, you would go to your insurance company, which takes the place of the guilty driver. And your insurance company will not raise your rates. UM coverage provides strong coverage for you and your family. But you haveto raise the policy limits of the coverage. Tell your agent you want at least $100,000 in UM coverage. The price you will pay for the additional coverage is surprisingly little. Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UIM)What about the situation where you are in a bad wreck and the guilty driver has only the state minimum required insurance coverage? Often, the other driver’s policy limits are too low to pay for all of your medical costs and lost wages. In this situation, you need UIM coverage. UIM insurance provides coverage in those cases where the other driver’s insurance does not compensate you enough for your expenses. Your insurance company pays for the portion of your expenses not covered by the other driver. For maximum protection, you should have carry a minimum $100 thousand in UIM coverage. Like additional UM coverage, UIM coverage will only add a few dollars to your insurance bill. Medical Payments Coverage (MPC)UM and UIM coverage only apply if someone else is at fault for your injuries. With MPC, it doesn't matter who is at fault. The coverage simply reimburses you for medical bills you incur due to injuries while using the car. I suggest at least $5,000 in coverage. It's low cost, and it allows you to “double dip” when another driver is at fault. You are allowed to collect from the other driver’s insurance company and still be reimbursed for your medical bills by your own insurance company. The three types of insurance coverage discussed in this article work together to provide you with maximum protection in the event of an auto accident.
