Selecting a Dedicated Server Plan

When choosing your dedicated server service, you must fully certain on what service that you want and compare thoroughly each dedicated server plan offered by the plan provider.. It's not uncommon for dedicated server users that buying based on cost only finding themselves frustrated because the lack of support, or customers who paying services that they don't even require or used and ultimately wasting their cash.

Below are few points that you should consider when looking for a dedicated hosting plan:

Operating System/Platform

Selecting your operating system platform is one of the most fundamental step, you have to be positive that the operating system installed is compatible with the application that you want. If your website using PHP,Perl or Python then Linux/BSD is your best choice compared to Windows because of their cheaper charge. Although Windows can also operate those applications, Windows server are more expensive than the Unix one that is because Linux/BSD are free operating system while Windows are commercial operating system, the price to obtain a Windows license will also affect the overall expenses when buying a dedicated server plan. Even though Windows will have no problem to operate those sites, the fee for Windows hosting is more costly compared to Linux/BSD this is because you have to pay for a Windows license and this will add to the total cost when purchasing a dedicated hosting service.

The story would be different if your website is created using ASP/ASP.NET or you are using Microsoft SQL Server, if this is the case then Windows woud be your single option the support for those applications only present in Windows. If you are planning to use dedicated server for hosting email accounts or used as a firewall, then you should choose which one you are most comfortable with.

Managed or unmanaged plan

You have to know what managed plan and unmanaged service are, in a nutshell managed plan means that the dedicated server service provider will manage the dedicated server for you. This service might include operating system update, network maintenance, security update, backup data and other server maintenance task.

While unamanaged plan means that the dedicated server service provider will only give minimal to no support for your dedicated server, all maintenance task and updates are in your hand. In  unmanaged plan the dedicated server plan provider, typically will only offer redundant power and HVAC (Heat, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) support.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth are getting less expensive these days and also bigger in capacity. Some dedicated server service provider even present unlimited bandwidth, but not because they offer "unlimited" bandwidth means that they can give such bandwidth. So be cautious about this, don't just get a dedicated server plan merely because the plan offers unlimited stuff.

Server Hardware Specification

The hardware specifications of the dedicated server also plays an critical function, if you host a high traffic site that gives multimedia contents, you don't want to use a server with only 512MB of RAM and a single core processor because this kind of duty is too much for machine with that specification. You have to be positive the dedicated server is up to the job, but don't go too much.
