Self Credit Repair - Taking Control

If you have gotten into some credit trouble, you may have considered self credit repair. Though there are many different companies and organizations out there whose main focus is to help people repair their credit, almost all of them will cost you money. Since it was lack of money that probably caused your credit problems in the first place, then you probably don't want to add another bill to the ones you already can't pay. Plus, it's hard trying to figure out which of these credit repair agencies are really legitimate and which ones are going to take your money without really helping you. Self credit repair is a good way to go to avoid these problems, as long as you know what to do.

In the end, nobody can really repair your credit for you, so any credit repair is really self credit repair. What the credit repair agencies advertise is that they can help you to repair your credit as fast as possible. Actually, there's nothing that they can really do that you can't do yourself. The first thing that you want to do is sit down and list all of your bills. Next to each bill on this self credit repair list, make more columns and write down what the entire amount owed is, what the normal monthly payments are, and how far behind you are in paying them.

Once you have your self credit repair list made, prioritize it. Put the most important bills on the top of the list and the least important on the bottom of the list. The most important bills would be ones like your mortgage payment, car payment, and utilities. Even though utilities are ongoing and you never actually pay them off, you still need to keep current enough with them so that you won't have important services like your electricity and phone cut off.

After you've prioritized your self credit repair list, start calling your creditors. This is the most difficult part, but important. Be honest about your financial situation and ask if they can work with you. Most of your creditors will want to figure out a way to work with you. If they believe that they will eventually get all of the money that you owe them, then lowering their interest rates for a while or extending the payments will benefit them in the long run. After you've spoken with your creditors, make a plan and schedule according to your conversations. Stick to this plan religiously and you may find yourself back on track before you know it.
