Self Inflating Air Mattress

A self inflating air mattress can be nifty sleeping accessories, or just huge pains in the you-know-what. Ok, so a self inflating air mattress is supposed to do just that: blow up through a system of valves when the thing is triggered, and remain blown up until it is deflated. The problem with most self inflating air mattresses is that they are bad at holding air.

Though I've read mixed reviews about self inflating air mattresses on the internet, I have my own experiences with these types of traveling sleep gear myself. I purchased an Eddie Bauer self inflating air mattress at Target for about $40 USD.

The self inflating air mattress worked great the first night. IT blew up just lie kit was supposed to. Following the enclosed instructions was easy. I'm pretty sure that most people could figure out how to inflate the self inflating air mattress without reading the instructions at all.

I blew up the Eddie Bauer self inflating air mattress, closed the air valves and went to sleep. I was on a week long camping trip and so far this self inflating air mattress was turning out to be a fun alternative to the old manual kind, even though it cost about ten times as much.

Over the course of that summer I'd gotten in the routine of keeping on the move and regularly only camped in one spot for a single night. I like to place an inflatable mattress below my sleeping bag on camping sites with hard ground. I thought that perhaps a self inflating air mattress would make the frequent moves easier.

On the second night I proceeded to let the Eddie Bauer self inflating air mattress inflate itself so that I could rest my weary body. It filled up, I secured the air valve and laid my sleeping bag on top of the self inflating air mattress. Only this night something went wrong. When I woke up the next morning, the Eddie Bauer self inflating air mattress was quite flat.

Though it hadn't fallen completely flat, the lower parts of my body were touching the ground. I tried again to fill the self inflating air mattress the next night and it held about the same amount of air for about the same amount of time. It was on the fifth or sixth morning that I began waking up with the self inflating air mattress completely flat on the ground.

I'm not sure what the problem is with the Eddie Bauer self inflating air mattress, but it seems to me that the seams are not very tough and are what is responsible for the self inflating air mattress losing air so easily. Overall, I wouldn't recommend the Eddie Bauer self inflating air mattress, and I have not tried other self inflating air mattresses, but I think I will see what other brands have to offer in the way of self inflating air mattresses.
