Selling a motorcycle can be difficult most people get very attached to their bikes. If you can afford it with the cost of insurance as well as the maintenance up keep and have space in the garage you could keep it. This depends on how much you have invested emotionally.

The first thing you need to do once you decided to sell you motorcycle is to determine what extras you will include with the sale of your bike. Sometimes giving a helmet or riding jacket can help close a sale.

Next you should take your bike to a car wash and pressure wash it. After getting home you should wax the painted parts as well as polish all chrome parts and clean the seat with a good cleaner.

After you've got it all cleaned up look at it very carefully. Check to see if there is any damaged parts that should be replaced. Things like a bent mirror or damaged cover will depreciate the money you get for the bike The better your bike looks the more it will sell for.

Before putting your motorcycle on the market you should check with a few dealers to see what the fair market value is. You can also use the Kelly Blue Book as a price check.

Now you need to decide what your asking price will be. Be realistic about the real value or the motorcycle. If the price is over inflated because you like the bike it will not sell. Remember there are a lot of motorcycles you have to compete with on the open market including the dealers.

If you are selling your motorcycle because you plan on purchasing a new motorcycle the dealer will more than happy to take your bike on trade if it is in good condition.

With the advent of the internet and online auctions this has become a very popular way to sell a motorcycle. If you decide to try to sell your bike using this method you should look at different ads to see how other people have listed their bikes. Do not forget to include good pictures. Don't forget there is a cost to this process including a fee to list it and a fee based on the final sale price.

Be sure to tell your friends that your bike is for sale even the ones that don't ride. They are great source for speading the word to others, or they may decide this is the time to learn and may purchase your motorcycle.

If there is a riding club in your community let them know that your bike is for sale. If they have a club newsletter you can advertise in it. If you are a member of the club other rides will know the condition of your bike and may choose to buy it.

You can also put the bike on consignment at a local dealer. Some dealers will even put it on their show room floor, especially if the motorcycle is a popular or rare model. Don't forget the dealer will charge you a commission as well for any repairs that are needed before the bike sells. Be sure your price reflects this.

You can also advertise your motorcycle in the local newspaper in the classified ads or you could put up flyers around town. You might also try putting it on the classifieds found online. Usually these sites let you advertise for free. Don't forget to place a for sale sign on it when you park it at work or at home. People driving by just might stop.
