Serious Health Risks Could Begin in Overweight Individuals
|
Being overweight is a serious health problem, according to a report recently published in a leading health advisory. The health risks associated with obesity are well documented and seemingly endless, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and respiratory problems, to name just a few. This will not come as news to most people. However the surprising story is that experts are warning that all of these problems start developing even when an adult is slightly overweight. (Having a BMI of over 25. For many years, the body mass index (BMI) level has been an indication of the ideal healthy body weight. This statistical measurement is derived from the height and weight of an individual to show if they fall into the normal, overweight or obesity category. If a person’s bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be for their given height, they are considered obese. This measurement is not entirely accurate as it does not take into account body fat percentage or muscle mass. However, generally speaking, it is the most convenient method available for determining if an adult is at risk. Researchers have been examining the link between being overweight (according to BMI level) and the risk of premature death from all causes. Even in young adults who appear seemingly fit, being overweight is clearly related to the development of elevated levels of cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Any one of these problems can lead to serious health risks, which if left untreated, can result in fatality. However the true impact of being overweight is not as well known as researchers would like. The main problem with measuring the dangers of being overweight is that the commonly-used body mass index level doesn’t differentiate between different types of body mass. Fat mass is related to a number of health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. On the contrary, lean body mass, including muscle, is known to help reduce many health risks. Two individuals of the same height and weight, according the BMI, may both be seriously overweight. In reality, one may have a large proportion of fat mass and the other could be very lean and healthy. Focusing only on the link between mortality and BMI level misses “the larger picture”, a recent statement said. “This larger picture includes important relationships between BMI and other health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease and its risk factors”, said Cora E. Lewis M. “Meanwhile, we cannot afford to wait for this research to begin addressing the problem of overweight in our patients and in our society,” the advisory authors state. Obesity is clearly a growing problem. Whilst the true damage of being overweight is yet to be realised, there are many steps patients can take to start losing weight and leading a healthier lifestyle. Regular exercise of at least 40 minutes a day and a calorie controlled diet that is low in unhealthy fats may be all that is required to promote significant levels of weight loss.
