Serve Your Guests A Nutritious Dessert

These days it seems everything is about nutrition so when we are entertaining guests we want to serve them food that’s good for them but tastes good too. When it comes to dessert this is actually quite an easy task. So why not serve your guests a nutritious dessert and impress them with your talents?

Making a healthy dessert doesn’t have to cost you any more money than making one of our more traditional desserts. What it will cost you is a bit of thinking time and creativity to that you serve up something that tastes and looks real good!

Fruit is always a great start for a healthy dessert. You can slice it, dice it, and serve one type of fruit or many. You can crisp it; serve it with low fat yogurt and sprinkles. Or perhaps you want to make a crumb cake from fresh fruit. You can even make a nice light parfait, or a low fat custard Using fresh fruit that’s in season will keep your costs lower and your fruit fresher.

Fat free pudding is a great helper for making a healthy dessert. Serve up the pudding by itself with a fresh fruit topper, or add some sprinkles or a cherry. You have plenty of pudding flavors to choose from. You can even build a pudding square layering fresh fruit between your pudding layers. You could add a small glob of low fat whip cream to the top if you like.

Low fat yogurt also lend itself to creativity. You can mix fruit in it, you can serve it by itself with a fruit topper, and you can use it as a dip for a fruit platter.

Low fat yogurt is a great substitute for ice cream, so get creative. You can even make yogurt popsicles. Yogurt fruit shakes are another great choice. How about a yogurt banana split. Substitute yogurt for the ice cream, add fresh fruit, and just a tough of low fat whip cream.

Good old reliable Jell-O comes through again. Low fat, non dairy and high in liquid content, and so cheap. Choose a flavor, choose a color and get creative. You can mix fresh fruit in the Jell-O and make a fruit salad, you can top with fresh fruit, you can add a small glob of low fat whip cream, and you can even layer it if you like.

Jell-O molds are a great way to make plain old Jell-O look pretty impressive. You can also make a Jell-O banana split. Substitute Jell-O for ice cream; add fresh fruit, and just a touch of low fat whip cream.

Dessert breads are another fairly healthy dessert choice. Make up your favorite dessert bread and top with fresh fruit, or how about lemon bread. Delicious!

Angel food cake is also a very good choice. Skip the icing, add a scoop of yogurt and top with fresh fruit, or you can just add fresh fruit without the yogurt. Pineapple or strawberries are absolutely delicious over angel food cake.

Another great idea for angel food cake is to layer it. Cut your angel food cake in half and fill the middle with fresh fruit. Kiwi, strawberries, pineapple, banana, you name it you can add it. Place the top layer of the cake on top and then icing with just a very thin layer of low fat white icing. Delicious! And relatively low in calories. Perfect for those times you just want to go a little bit out on the limb.

Peaches and cream are every so yummy and also a healthy choice if you go easy on the cream. Again you can substitute yogurt for the cream if you like.
