Setting up a Home Bar: Essential Bar Supplies

At one time when a couple planned to set up their first home, it was quite natural to assume that essential bar supplies would be included in their list of must-haves. This was especially true if one or both of the individuals were involved in social or employment related activities that necessitate entertaining on a frequent basis. For awhile, the in-home bar seemed to fade from the limelight; however, it has become much more popular to once again begin enjoying the social niceties that stocking essential bar supplies can bring. Regardless of whether you entertain frequently or simply want to enjoy a nice relaxing drink in the comfort of your own home, barware is once again on the must-have list.

Depending on the type of drinks you prefer, and whether you do plan to entertain; you will need various types and kinds of bar ware. Among the essential bar supplies you will want to include are cocktail shakers.

If you plan to make frozen drinks such as margaritas and daiquiris then a good blender will also be an essential to include in your barware supplies.

Beyond these essential items, you will also need several smaller barware tools. These items can often be procured on a one on one basis or purchased together in a nice matching set. Tools you will need include a double jigger, bar spoon and knife, corkscrew, bottle opener, strainer, lemon zester, mixing whisk and ice tongs.

Glassware runs the gamut when it comes to barware and you will quickly discover that you have a wide variety of options. Many individuals choose to go with an antique or retro look when setting up their home bar and if this is your interest you can find nice pieces in a variety of locations. Collectibles items can be quite pricey; although if you are lucky you can also find a nice set of glassware at an estate sale or garage sale for almost nothing.

When purchasing the glassware for your home bar you will want to include cocktail glasses, also known as martini glasses. These glasses are traditionally used to serve drinks that are intended to be chilled.

Margarita glasses are somewhat similar to cocktail glasses; however you will note that they are often rounded and many of the most popular margarita glasses today sport stems with incredible designs and decorations.

The traditional beer glass is known as a pilsner and it is also a must have among your essential bar supplies. Don’t even think about serving your brew in anything else, because the shape and design of a pilsner was created specifically to show off the carbonation and aroma of beer.

The snifter is used to serve cognac or after dinner liqueur. Again, no substitutions here. This glass was designed specifically for the purpose of allowing the hand of the person holding the drink to warm the glass; which is a great way to bring out the aroma of the drink.

You will also want to include tulip glasses-perfect for smaller frozen drinks as well as various size tumblers. Don’t forget flutes for champagne, and good quality shot glasses as well as mugs that can be used for everything from Irish coffee to wonderful cappuccinos.

Finally, while this will be left strictly up to your own preferences; you might want to pick up some nice coasters and drink stirs to include in your barware. It’s also a nice touch to have some beverage napkins on hand. You can purchase either the plain paper variety or go all out and have a couple of dozen or more done up with your monogram for a true touch of class.
