Short breaks in South Hams – five essential destinations for a romantic weekend

If you and your partner are looking for a romantic weekend break in England, then there is perhaps nowhere better to visit than the beautiful region of South Hams in Devon. There are lots of things to see and do and the area is filled with romantic places that you can visit. Whether you fancy a dreamy hand-in-hand stroll across majestic cliff tops, or sharing a gorgeous chocolate dessert in a luxury restaurant, there are plenty of things to choose from on your Devon holiday break. If you need a little help choosing the perfect romantic holiday, then here are five essential destinations that you could try.

You can visit the romantic wilderness of the National Trust’s Greenway Park near Brixham. This is an ideal spot for a romantic Devon holiday get away because not only is the parkland beautiful, but the location also lies on the bank of the River Dart. This means that you can make the outing even more special by arriving by ferry. A tranquil boat journey along the Dart and then a peaceful stroll through the park’s awe-inspiring trees – what could be a more perfect way to begin your romantic break?

If you fancy something a little more ‘gothic romance’ then you may want to visit the dramatic Castle Drogo. This was the last castle to be built in England and so is still in perfect condition. From within its spectacular walls you can see wild and beautiful Dartmoor stretching out in every direction. For a really gothic feel, there is also the nearby Teign Gorge. If you fancy a romantic stroll then the Teign Gorge and Special Moor Stones walk is one of the most attractive. The Two Moors Way leads past both of these breathtaking sites and is the oldest long-distance path in Devon. It stretches from Ivybridge, on the edge of Dartmoor, to Lymouth on Exmoor; hence the ‘two moors’. Along the way there is some amazing scenery as well as the ancient carved moor stones dotted along the route. A perfect route for that hand-in-hand amble!

If it’s a romantic candle lit dinner that you are looking for, then you could visit the sumptuous Orestone Manor Restaurant near Torquay. This is an AA rosette-winning restaurant that uses produce from its own gardens to create some of the tastiest contemporary English a la carte dishes. From Baked Vine Cherry Tomato Tarts to Butter Poached Lobster Tail, the dishes are truly delicious. A great dessert to share is the exotic Champagne and Raspberry Terrine. And of course there are plenty of romantic beaches to visit. Some of the best beaches are at East Portlemouth. A little away from the more crowded beaches of the English Rivera, this also involves a beautiful ferry ride, this time away from the busy streets of Salcombe. Once you arrive in East Porlemouth you will feel as if you have entered a different world. You will find three unspoilt beaches, an amazing coastal path walk, and some gorgeous wildlife. There is also a wonderful café that you can visit named, appropriately, The Venus Café, where you can buy their speciality organic teas.
