Single White Traveller

Backpacking is becoming safer and easier every year and as more andmore females choose to travel alone hostels, travel companies andactivity services have to do adapt and they are doing so quitesuccessfully.

Travelling alone however, particularly if you are awoman, is still more risky and potentially hazardous than going as agroup. But the freedom and rewards it offers are unparalleled anddefinitely worth a little uncertainty.

Backpackers are the most ‘at-risk’ group oftravellers, so make sure you take the necessary steps in protectingyourself against the unknown and first and foremost, get insurance. Many insurers also have 24-hour international emergency help lines thatcould prove invaluable.

Secondly, keep in touch. Use email or your mobile phone to check inregularly with home and even fellow travellers. Make sure your phone’sroaming capability is activated and investigate whether your networkprovider offers any special discounts on international calling.

Don’t bother packing good-quality clothes and forgethigh-heeled shoes. Firstly, you will be laughed out of the hostel ifyou turn up in stilettos and a LBD, but secondly save the space forsomething more useful such as a first aid kit, a decent pair oftrainers that you can walk long distances in and a waterproof rain mac.Travelling clothes are a fashion statement in themselves, so enjoy thefact that you don’t need to wear foundation, heels and a dresseveryday.

Toiletry wise, it’s cheaper to buy shampoo, conditioner etc when you arrive at your destination plus you’ll alsosave valuable weight at the airport check-in desk. Sanitary items andmedicines however are worth buying at home, as in some parts of Africafor example, you’ll have problems getting hold of these.

Hair straighteners are becoming more commonplace in a girl’s backpack;however, it’s worth noting that they’re only really useful if yourtravels take you to Europe, or Aus and New Zealand. Elsewhere thevoltage will be too low and power unreliable so they’ll be a waste ofspace.

Hair-ties on the other hand are useful. Humidity andhair are not the best of friends, so keep your hair tied back and don’topt for a centre parting as you could risk burning your scalp ouch!

In sum, travel as light as possible. You can cut back on clothes but not medicines and remember to save room for shopping.
