For singles who are dating or using internet dating and chat rooms, texting, if utilised correctly, can be a great ally.
 

Text messaging or sms (short message service) is by far the most convenient, fastest and direct form of communication available other than face to face communication.

Have you recently been out to a bar or similar type venue and exchanged mobile numbers with someone you met that night? Come the next day, your dead keen to contact this person but your not feeling quite as confident as the night before when you had those 6 gin and tonics under your belt. A text message is a simple yet very effective option. This removes the feeling of rejection if they don't return your text, there is no awkwardness of real chat, a text message allows you to be blunt and upfront placing the ball squarely in their court.

Try not to over emphasize text messaging. You don't wont to run the risk of building up someone's expectations only to let them down, down the track. Texting is most effective for short and simple communication, and should be kept to a minimal length otherwise your message can often leed to misinterpretation.

More and more we hear stories of people ending an agreement or even a romance via a text message. A text is a fun way to hit off a romance, but a terrible and gutless way to end one. It has been noted as part of an internet dating research project by an Australian University, in a recent poll, that 28% of relationships end via text messaging. 62% of singles in this same poll stated that over abbreviations in text messages were a turn off.    

An unspoken rule that applies is that its courteous to return a text message within a few hours. If no message is returned, it can look like you are being ignored. People often make the mistake of using the wrong context or being alittle sarcastic when texting. A sarcastic text message can often offend the recipient who can easily interpret your message in a different view other than the view you intended.

Texting is used for many purposes other than for singles and dating purposes. Its a very handy tool for communicating with friends, family or for business purposes. Worldwide, there are more than 3 billion text messages exchanged everyday.

Some internet dating sites have adapted with the times offering singles mobile chat and text chat as part of their website features. An IT expert from the USA - Michael Turner, held a business conference in Sydney Australia in mid 2007, and made the prediction that mobile devices and mobile communication would replace all forms of current non mobile devices such as desk tops within the next 7-8 years.
