Sink Supply Lines: We All Need Them

Replacing your sink supply lines may be the easiest plumbing job to do. Knowing when to do this job is also easy. When you have water on the floor from the sink supply lines, it is time to replace them. If your sink supply lines are inside a cabinet, then any of the types available will do the job. If you are replacing them on a pedestal sink, then the appearance and style become more important. The materials that sink supply lines are available in are brass, stainless steel, copper and plastic.

When installing sink supply lines on a pedestal sink for your bathroom, you might consider trying to match either the metal of your hardware or the color of the sink. If neither seems to be an option, then copper or brass is always appropriate. Brass or copper sink supply lines are straight tubes and will need to be bent into shape for your sink. You can get stainless steel or plastic sink supply lines as flexible tubing and this is probably the easiest to install. Simply screw the ends onto the faucet and the water shut-off valve. Make sure that you use the washers supplied with the sink supply lines as these are to prevent water leaking. Using Teflon or silicon sealant tape on the threads will assist with preventing water leaks also.

Brass and copper sink supply lines will come in the standard twenty inch length and can be bent carefully by hand to fit from the water shut-off valve to the faucet. Do the bending slowly to prevent making a kink in the line and slowing or even shutting off the supply of water to the faucet. There are tools available designed to put bends in your line that will appear more artistic than can usually be achieved by hand.

In addition, you may find it most advantageous to shop around before purchasing your supply lines. Retailers will offer different prices for the same material. These price differences can be enormous. Usually, the material and actual fabrication process will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Spending a little bit more for a high-quality supply line now will definitely save you money in the years to come. A cheap supply line will crack and split causing small leaks at first that tend to go unnoticed. Usually, by the time you notice these leaks, the damage has been done. Water damage to your floor will cost a lot more money to fix than buying a high-quality supply line from the beginning. It is a good idea to check that supply line for wear-and-tear on a regular basis anyway.

Maybe a sink supply line is not at the top of your mind when you refinish your kitchen but maybe it should be. A little bit of time and thought now will save you a lot of problems later. Of course, you decide what material is best for you and a retailer will be more than happy to discuss the benefits of each.
