Sir Paul McCartney Plays Classic Hit for Michelle Obama

Paul McCartney sung a tune to Michelle Obama at his Washington D.C. show Saturday August First. The song obviously was the Beatles classic 'Michelle'.

Sir Paul played the loving love song to The Presidents Wife to sixty thousand McCartney fans at D.C.s FedEX Field. Sadly there was not 60,001 in attendence. The First Lady had left the stadium early to leave on vacation to Camp David.

In 2008, in an MTV Europe awards ceremony where Sir Paul was presented with the Ultimate Legend Award, Paul thanked everyone in America for electing for Obama. McCartney later announced that he would be honored to play for Obama and his his other half. Paul hinted he had a song prepared to play for Mrs. Obama.

I went to Paul McCartney's Citi Field show and recall he had pictures of Barrack Obama projected behind the stage at during the performance. During Paul's introduction to the White Album classic 'Black Bird' McCartney told the audience the song was written about the African American movement in the 60s. It felt happy that things have progressed since then.

The Beatles classic 'Michelle' wasn't written about a real Michelle. 'Michelle, ma belle' was suggested to Sir Paul by a French Teacher who was a friend's wife. She also interpreted McCartney's lyric, 'These are words that go together well' into the french 'Sont des mots qui vont tres bien ensemble' which was also included in the song. Although his friend never receive writing credit, McCartney did send her a sizeable check. Hey, I wouldn't be offended by that pay-day for writing 2 words.

In the Paul McCartney Autobiography, he recollects the way in which the tune Michelle was easy to mix since it was only 4 tracks. McCartney remembered how there were not any decisions to make during mixing since they'd made all the decisions in the writing and in the making of the recording. Paul said that it took only about a half an hour to mix. With just minimum effort and cost, the basic song racked up more than 4,000,000 broadcast performances since the 60s. The classic Beatles song also received a Grammy in '66 for Song of the Year.

McCartney goes on to recollect in the Paul McCartney Autobiography how, just after Michelle was released, cameraman David Bailey told McCartney he thought it had been a tongue in cheek joke. He believed 'Michelle' was a parody of a French song. At the time, Paul literally instructed him to F-Off. But, now Paul understands what Bailey meant and agrees Michelle was in a way a parody of a French song.
