Sites to See in Italy



If you’re planning a trip to Italy soon, one of the hardest decisions that you may have to make is how to cram everything worth seeing into a limited schedule. From one region to the next, Italy is prolific is beautiful and historic sites as well as museums and other attractions that will make you want to extend your vacation just a bit more.

When deciding which region of Italy to visit first, it’s best to understand a little background information about each.

Rome is one of the most well known regions of Italy and is a great place to visit in order to understand the history and culture of this fascinating country. Known as the eternal city, Rome is home to the Vatican and the Colosseum; two of the most popular sites in Italy as well as the Sistine Chapel. In addition to these two beautiful sites, there are also numerous museums, parks, fountains, churches and basilicas that you will want to be sure to visit while in town. When in Rome, also don’t forget to stop by the Pantheon, built in 27 BC as a temple for all the gods. The Roman Forum, built more than 900 years ago, served as the center of political, religious and commercial life in Rome for hundreds of years and is still worth a visit today.

Florence is also a fantastic region in Rome to visit in order to understand the cultural and historical significance Italy has had on the world. Much of Florence has retained a medieval appearance, giving it a striking and picturesque quality that is hard to forget. Boboli Gardens should be at the top of your list when visiting Florence as well as the Duomo; the famous red-tiled dome that highlights Florence’s skyline. Perhaps the most famous tourist site in Florence is Michelangelo’s David

Venice is one of the most fascinating cities in Italy and is well worth the trip for the canals and gondolas alone. While you’re there you might also want to check out the famed St. Mark’s Basilica as well as the numerous museums that house some of the finest artworks from Venice and throughout Italy.

Located on the bay, Naples has much to offer in the way of night life and entertainment. With year round concerts and performances located at the Teatro San Carlo as well as the numerous street markets, you will find plenty to keep you occupied in Naples.

While there are numerous regions in Rome worth visiting, there are also several sites that are worthy of a trip to Italy by themselves.

Although history has remembered Pompeii as more of a scene of destruction than anything else, more than 2 million visitors still make their way each year to view the ruins of the ancient township that was destroyed in 79 AD when Mt. Vesuvius erupted. Located to the east of Naples, Pompeii continues to fascinate visitors because it largely remains preserved in the state in which it existed at the time of its destruction.

Valley of the Temples is another popular tourist attraction in Italy, located in Sicily. The ruins of temples build tin the 5th century B.C. still stand here today, blazing against the backdrop of the Sicilian landscape. The Temple of Hercules is the oldest and also one of the most renowned.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the world’s most infamous architectural structures and the site of many of Galileo’s scientific experiments involving gravity. Work has been performed to stabilize the Tower and it is now once again possible for tourists to attempt the climb to the top, passing over more than 300 steps.
