Sitz Bath: Your Easy Health Solution

Sitz baths have been around for quite some time, and they are regaining their popularity today, as they are seen as an easy health solution, for women that have just given birth. Other ailments can be eased with this type of bath, like hemorrhoids, prostrate, vagina and urinary infections, anal and vaginal fissures and genital herpes.

For a sitz bath, you need to stay in warm water up to your waist, so the buttocks and the hips are submersed in water. The beneficial warm water helps the blood flow better and go to the area that needs healing. The blood will transport the good agents that can contribute to enhancing the healing process. The principles that are used to explain the effects of sitz baths are linked to hydrotherapy.

You can use your own bathtub to take a sitz bath. You will also need a shallow bucket that you can use as a sitz bath. On the market there are plastic sitz baths that can be used over the toilet. This is used for adding warm water in the bath, so the temperature remains stable. When the water reaches a higher level, it will pour into the toilet, to avoid overflooding. This purchase is not expensive, and it costs no more than $15.

Put warm water in your chosen container. The temperature of the water needs to be warm enough that you do not get cold, but also not so warm that burns the skin. Make sure that the water covers you up to the waist level.

Some adepts of sitz baths like to add an extra step to the therapy, called the cold water step. For that, you need to fill the bathtub, or your plastic sitz bath with cold water. For maximum effect, you need to move between warm and cold several times. As some recommend, alternating warm and cold needs to be done for 5-6 times and several times a week.

Half an hour spent in the warm water will help your body regenerate and heal itself.

After you are done with your sitz bath, you must get out of the water and pat dry your body with a cotton towel. You can even let the water dry on your skin, but only if you are comfortable enough with this practice.

Salts can also be added to the sitz bath. They are usually recommended for women that gave birth and experience vaginal and perineal discomfort. The dosage must be chosen according to how much water you have in your sitz bath. Make sure that it dissolves itself.

Vinegar added to sitz baths has proven to be effective in vaginal yeast infections. The action of vinegar drives the yeast away, but the method is not recommended, at least, not without the doctor's supervision.
