Skin Tags

Skin tags are small growths that look like oversized moles or hanging skin. People may be alarmed at them, but you shouldn’t worry. Despite skin tags being classified medically as “tumors”, they are pretty much harmless.

Of course, being harmless doesn’t make them any less of an irritation. They can be debilitating to one’s social life, especially if located in exposed areas like the face.

There are certain cases when the skin tag just falls off on its own without any pain. The usual cause for this would be ligation. This process involves cutting off the blood flow to the skin tag, which leads to its dying and subsequent painless removal. This can occur by accident, with normal human motion twisting the skin tag on its base and cutting off blood supply.

This is also a popular surgical method for the removal of skin tags. Although ligation can take a bit of a long time to work, it can be barely noticeable and quite painless. The ligation also takes very little time and is quite cheap to perform.

The next most common procedure for skin tag removal is by cutting. A cosmetic surgeon may use surgical scissors or a scalpel to remove the skin tag. This process involves minimal pain and anesthesia could be used during the skin tag removal.

Cauterization involves the burning of the skin tags. Before you envision brands of red-hot iron, you should realize that medical technology has gone a long way since middle-age cauterizations. Nowadays, lasers or electrolysis are used in skin tag removal, ensuring a quick and painless procedure. Cauterization is actually performed to stop bleeding and jump-start the healing process.

The opposite of cauterization is cryosurgery or freezing. The old approach to cryosurgery is the usage of liquid nitrogen or dry ice dabbed onto the skin tag to freeze it. The problem with this process is that the chemicals can spread to other areas or damage the tissue surrounding the skin tag. A more precise method today is to use argon gas to control the rate of freezing and more precisely freeze the problematic skin tags.

Of course, the more advanced technology involved in this type of cosmetic surgery could cause you to shrug off this option. After all, you should keep in mind that cosmetic surgery is not covered by most insurance companies.

If you find that you have a skin tag, you really shouldn’t worry as these don’t pose any threat to your health. However, if they are located in an inconvenient area and you want them removed, there are many methods available to you. You need to consult your dermatologist and physician to see if which options are the best for you.
