Sniper Scope Magnification and Your Occupation

There are a variety of reasons to own a sniper scope, and when choosing a scope for sniping usually one of the concerns is the magnification of the scope. It is important to remember that not all these scopes are created equally, and often the magnification of the scope has much to do with how the cope will be used. Often what you will be using this scope for is determined by your occupation, and what uses you have for the scope. Most occupations will need a different scope magnification, and it is important that you understand your job and your needs before you make that choice. We will discuss three very different occupations and their needs of scope magnification in this article, including law enforcement officers, military personnel, and gun collectors/part-time shooters.

For the law enforcement officer the right sniper scope can mean the difference between life and death for not only him, but other law enforcement members, as well as innocent bystanders. Usually those involved in law enforcement will only need a scope that has low power. A scope that goes up to 6x power is usually all they will need for this kind of a job. It may be surprising, but usually shots by law enforcement officers are taken at fairly close ranges. Usually the shots taken will actually be less than 70 yards, and many times way closer than that. A law enforcement officer needs to have a large field of view and if the scope is too powerful it can limit the field of view at shorter ranges. Usually the best ranges of power for scopes for law enforcement officers are around 4x to 6x. Remember that most of the shots taken by law enforcement officers are done at short range, even in SWAT team situations, so the need for a high powered scope is very rare.

The needs of military personnel are totally different than that of law enforcement officers. Presently, many scopes used by military personnel are 10x power and many feel that this is the best scope power for making body shots on chosen targets. Usually it is best to use 10x power on shots that are taken from 250 yards to 1000 yards away. If you try to use this power at targets that are closer than 250 yards you will have a very limited viewing area, and a moving target may walk out of the view of your scope. This 10x scope has many benefits such as good light transmission, good field of view at medium ranges, and it is not to large to carry around easily. This scope also keeps your target from being obscured by mirage. If you are a sniper in the military and will be taking shots at distances over 1000 yards then you may need to consider a higher powered sniper scope. Powers higher than 10x may also be used in tactical competitions that require long distance target shots of over 1000 yards.

Totally different from the needs of both military and law enforcement persons are the needs of gun collectors and part-time shooters. Whether you collect guns as a hobby, you target shoot for fun, or you hunt with scopes, you can actually just get the sniper scope that is standard for whatever gun you may own. If you are just collecting guns, then the scope may just be for show and never be used, so you do not have to be concerned about making a scope decision that will affects lives. If you target shoot then you will want to find the appropriate scope for the distance you enjoy shooting at. If you enjoy hunting you may want a scope with variable power so you can make long shots and short shots.
