Southern California Air Conditioning Sales Slow, Bright Future Expected

Despite Slowing Sales, Air Conditioning Industry Looking Forward to a Bright Future

Accordingto a report by the Heating, Air conditioning and RefrigerationDistributors International (HARDI) summer 2009's air conditioning saleswere like the weather, not so hot. Summer weather and air conditioningsales generally go together in California. When it is hot outside forweeks on end, people need an air conditioning unit which can keep upwith the demand. Extended heat during the summer month can also lead toolder units burning out. With a more mild summer, these issues don'tpop up. Because of this, it isn't much of a surprise that airconditioning sales were down.

Economy, Repairs, and Ecological Reform Creating Buzz

Aswith everything else recently, some blame falls on the economy. Peopleare currently less willing to replace an aging air conditioner if itisn't completely broken. While this causes a short term problem for theHVAC industry, it isn't a permanent one. Air conditioning units willkeep aging, and every year, many will reach the point when they don'twork anymore. The bottom line is even if Californians aren't replacingtheir air conditioning units today, they will have to do it eventually.

BecauseCalifornians are more reluctant to replace their air conditioning unitsthe repair rate in California has gone up. Repairs only hold up for solong, so an increase in repairs doesn't mean there will be fewer airconditioning units sold later. A healthy amount of repair work can begood for HVAC companies because it helps them stay in contact withcustomers and build loyalty during slow periods.

Another factorwhich can help the HVAC industry down the line is the conversion to theR-410A coolant. The changeover won't be a world changing event, but taxcredits could provide enough motivation to encourage Californians toreplace their air conditioning unit before it is completely broken.
