Spam Control Tips

Spam has become one of the most feared words on the Internet because not only are all those unwanted e-mails simply annoying, but it's an excellent way for less than honorable individuals to con you into giving up all kinds of personal information or purchasing products you never really wanted.

While spam can definitely be annoying, there are a few ways that you can work to avoid it. There are a number of products on the market that provide anti-spam services, but before you go to that expense, why not first see if you can get a handle on the problem yourself, by following these easy to use techniques and tips.

Depending on the type of email client that you use, you may be able to control at least a portion of your spam with a junk e-mail folder. Numerous e-mail clients contain these specialized folders for the very purpose of controlling spam. It basically works by automatically filtering messages before they are sent to your Inbox. Based on several factors, the email client will make a determination regarding whether the message is legitimate or junk. Some of these factors include the time of day the message is sent as well as the very content of the message. You can then preview the message in your Junk E-mail folder and choose one of several options. If the e-mail is legitimate, you can choose an option that will allow the sender of the e-mail to deliver emails directly to your Inbox in the future. You can also delete the email or even block specific e-mail addresses or domain names from sending you messages in the future. These options can help to prevent catastrophic damage to your system. Of course, you should be aware that this technique alone won't take care of every unwanted email you may receive, so it will be necessary to take a few other steps as well.

Many people find that using what are commonly known as disposable email addresses also works wonders at controlling spam. This type of address, usually a web address offered for free from some of the major sites, can be very helpful when ordering items on line, etc. Reserve your primary address for trusted sources, such as friends and family.

It can be very tempting to reply to the sender of an unwanted e-mail, lambaste them and declare staunchly exactly what you think of them. Even if you're just emailing them to politely request that you be removed from their list, be aware that replying to the sender of spam will nothing for you except encourage more of the same. Delete it and forget it. If you don't respond, they will know that you are either not interested or the email address to which the message was sent is no good.

You can also control the amount of spam that you receive by taking precautions when you post your e-mail address on-line. If you frequent chat rooms, forums and bulletin boards, this is an important point. One of the ways that spammers get your e-mail address is by scanning such postings for what else-email addresses. Try inserting an odd number or symbol in your email address. Use something like: john#Doe@ao*l.com%. You can also post address correctly but take out the traditional @ symbol, such as johndoeaol.com.

While it seems to be a national pastime for some people, another great way to start reducing the amount of spam that you receive is to put a halt to chain emails. By forwarding or responding to these messages (even if it was actually forwarded by a trusted source) you can create a situation where your email address becomes public fodder who an unknown number of sources.

Before you register, sign-up or purchase anything on-line always be sure that you have reviewed everything carefully to ensure that you are not unwittingly agreeing to have your mailbox bombarded with junk mail or giving permission for your email address to be sold.

Finally, realize that while these tips will get rid of a large portion of spam you might otherwise receive, there is still a chance that an occasional potentially dangerous email will sneak through. In order to counter these emails, look into a quality anti-spam software program.
