Spotting After Period - What Women should know
|
Puberty brings a lot of hormonal changes; changes that include the start of menstruation. It is not uncommon at all for girls who are just starting menstruation to have spotting after period. As most women can attest to, the onset of puberty can cause all kinds of changes and fluctuations in the body, including irregular periods. Many girls don't start having regular periods until they are in their twenties or even their thirties, and are used to having spotting after period in their teenage years. Even though this may be normal for a particular girl, she should still see a gynecologist to rule out any abnormalities that may be causing it. Often the spotting after period is a dark brown blood that is fairly scant. The dark brown color signifies that this is older blood. Sometimes, for one reason or another, the uterus doesn't expel all of the menstrual tissue during normal menstruation, and it comes out a week or so later. If this starts happening suddenly and consistently, a doctor should determine if there is some kind of condition that is keeping the uterus from sufficiently expelling all menstrual tissue. If it only happens once in a while there is probably no reason for alarm. If spotting after period is bright red, pronounced, or heavy, a doctor should determine the cause. Often the spotting is caused by an ovarian or uterine cyst that may need to be removed. Excessive bleeding during or between periods is one of the major reasons for women to have partial or complete hysterectomies. As with puberty, however, women can experience spotting when they are pre-menopausal. This is perfectly normal and even expected. The bottom line is that after puberty a female should see a gynecologist once a year, and if there is any spotting she should definitely mention it to her doctor.
