Stomache - How does it Work?

The stomache is a very important part of our bodies as it helps us to store food we take in, break it up, and to make sure the body gets what it needs. We tend to assume that the stomache will always do its job but when it doesn't there can be some severe effects for the body to take care of. It may surprise you to learn that this part of the body is shaped like the letter J. The stomache is located between the esophagus and the intestines.

Believe it or not, the stomache is also a muscle in your body. There are four distinct sections of the stomache. The Cardia is where the food that is in the esophagus enters the stomache. The Fundus is the upper part of it that the food particles will enter into next. The body is the biggest part of the stomache where the digestion actually will occur. The Pylorus is located at the bottom of the stomach and this is where contents are taken to the small intestine.

The size of the stomache will vary by individual. When you consume more food your stomache will stretch. This is why it could end up taking more food at meals to get you to feel full. When you cut back on that intake though the stomache will shrink. Then you will start to be able to get full on smaller portions.

There are also five layers within the stomache. The Mucosa is the inner layer where digestion starts. The acid of the stomache is found within this layer. The Submucosa is next and also assists with digestion. The Muscularis is very muscular and strong. This works to mix the foods that are found within the stomache. The subserosa and the Serosa are the outer layers and they protect the stomache.

Some individuals undergo surgery to have a portion of the stomache cut out, stapled, or banned so that they can't consume as much food as before. This is generally only considered after significant efforts have been made to help the individual lose weight through diet and exercise. There can be serious complications to such procedures too that people need to be well aware of. This isn't to be a quick fix for someone with poor eating habits.

It is possible for a person to develop various types of ailments within the stomache. Too much acid in the stomache can result in ulcers forming. There are different types of infections that can occur as well that make it hard for the stomache to function like it should. Cancer can also spread into this part of the body and eat away at the lining of it.
