There are weird laws wherever you go, whether up in the east coast where you can be fined for flirting in New York or down in Florida where it's illegal to sing in public while wearing a swimsuit. It's no different down in the Southwest. For your amusement, here are some of the strangest laws on the books in the American Southwest.
Starting in New Mexico:
- In Deming, people are not permitted to spit on the steps of the opera house.
- In Carrizozo, women may not appear in public unshaven.
- In Las Cruces, if you're walking down Main Street, you may not do so while carrying a lunchbox.
In the big state of Texas, there are a number of strange laws.
- You cannot sell your eye. It is illegal.

- If you are standing, you may not take more than three sips of beer. Anything after three is illegal.
- Out in Galveston, you are not allowed to drive down Broadway in an automobile before noon on Sundays.

- It is prohibited to take a bite out of another person's hamburger.

- It's against the law to wear your boots to bed.
- In Clinton, it is not just strange to molest an automobile but also illegal.
- Whaling is against the law... In Oklahoma. Where would you whale in Oklahoma?
- Those who make ugly faces as dogs face jail time or a fine.
- Up until late 2006, tattoos were banned in the state.
In Arizona, there are also a few legal peculiarities.
- Hunting camels is not allowed.
- Suspenders are prohibited in Nogales.
- It is against the law for someone to refuse a glass of water.
- Maricopa County imposes a maximum legal limit of six girls living in any house.
- Out in Tucson, women are not allowed to wear pants.
