Stratera: The Controversy
|
On the list of drugs designed to treat the aforementioned disorder, we can cite Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Dextrostat and Dexedrine. Methylphenidate is the active ingredient in the first two, d- and l-amphetamin racemic in Adderall, and dextroamphetamine, in the other two. These are all stimulant drugs, which usually determine an individual to be more active. In those that suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder, the pills have a calming outcome, so people that are impulsive and distruptive can ease it down. There is no wonder that there are many parents and teachers that recommend the medication to treat youngsters with ADD. Stratera is another drug used in ADD, and it contains atomoxetine. Buproprion can be found as an active ingredient in Wellbutrin, clonidine, in Catapres, imipramine, in Tofranil, and desipramine in Norpramin. One of these names, Stratera, has been recently studied by the FDA, from the perspective of some dangers that it might pose to children that are treated with it for ADD. The result of the study points that usage of Stratera can be the cause for the appearance of suicidal thoughts in children. No doubt, this raises quite a controversy. Usually, drugs used for treating ADD, are often associated with a wide range of side effects, like loss of appetite, pains in the head and in the stomach, fast heart bit, pains in the chest and lack of sleep. The best way to reduce the bad impact of the medication is to lower the dosage and take the medicine with food and never just before bedtime. The people that protest against using medication for ADD usually claim that this is not at all a disorder, but a concern that was raised in parents having difficulty in disciplining their children. Such opinions are dangerous, as a disorder cannot be ignored like this, and left untreated, it will cause more harm. Always consider asking your doctor about Attention Deficit Disorder, and follow their advice, because unfounded opinions cannot simply take the place of the professional opinion. A thing is sure. ADD can only be alleviated with medication and drugs such as those mentioned before cannot replace therapy. The real cure for this disorder is behavioral therapy and medication is just an addition to help the children and the parents through.
