Stress and nerves in graduate recruitment

For some people this represents a major barrier to getting a job, and as the first in your future career the size of the problem cannot be underestimated. However, with a little understanding of how stress is created you can develop effective strategies to conquer your nerves, rean on!

The cause of stress and nerves is uncertainty, the more uncertain anything is, the more stress will be present, so the challenge is to remove as many uncertainties as possible.

If you've ever been traveling to an important meeting, and then began to realise you may be late you'll remember how awful it felt and indeed nervous due to the uncertainty of whether you would get there on time, whether you would loose the deal, loose your job, and so on. For an important interview in your graduate recruitment process this is an uncecessary stress. spend time mapping out your journey in advance, do a practise run and then add lots of spare time on to make sure it's never in doubt that you will be there. That'll be the first aspect of your pre-interview nerves removed.

Getting caught out with questions is always a gut wrenching experience in an interview. Getting caught out with things there's no excuse for not knowing is the worst. Any graduate recruitment interviewer is likely to ask you what you know about their company. Not being able to answer tells them you're not that interested in their company. Really get to grips with the company in advance, remove the worry of not answering any questions and indeed relish the thought of them asking and you'll remove another key source of nerves.

Meeting a stranger is always an uncertain event, what will they be like, loud or quiet, calm or aggressive. Worrying aboy the nature of your interviewer is often a source of nerves which can easily be removed. Your graduate recruitment agency is likely to be familiar with the recruiting manager and should be able to gove you a good picture of which he or she is like. Spend some time asking questions about them, build up a strong image of what they are like and remove this source of nerves.

Unless you have a particular aversion to it, exercise is probably the most powerful nerve buster of them all. Exercise sends clever hormones shotting around your body called endorphins, it's almost impossible to feel stressed or nervous when you have a body full of endorphins. If you are used to heavy exercise, you'll be familiar with the feeling of complete relaxation afterwards, endorphins are responsible for that feeling. If yu suffer badly from interview nerves, exercise just before your interview and you will remove another killer source of nerves.

There's safety, and more importantly more certainty in numbers. If you only have one graduate recruitment process on the go, you're leaving huge uncertainty surrounding the outcome. Get several up and running and the uncertainty relating to any one is less. This will leave you much less nervous on any one occasion.

Your future is naturally very important and this simply amplifies the stress and anxiety caused by any uncertainty generated by the graduate recruitment process. Follow some of these simply pointers and you will reduce your nerves and increase your success.
