Stretch Mark Cures

Stretch marks, while not posing any harm to the body and normal body function is the source of concern for many men and women. Most commonly occurring in women during pregnancy, stretch marks can occur anytime the skin is stretched due to rapid growth or weight gain.

Identified by reddish or purplish colored lines on the body, stretch marks leave a distinct mark on the body, one that leaves many people very self conscious. While stretch marks fade with time, there is often little one can do to escape them.

There are many creams and procedures on the market that claim to rid the body of stretch marks; truth is that little can be done once stretch marks occur. Many people have tried home herbal remedies such as olive oil and coco butter to prevent their occurrence, however there is little medical evidence to support the claim that these do in fact work.

Other treatments include microdermabrasion, and laser therapies. Factors such as the age of the stretch mark must be taken into consideration when determining what treatment should be used for the most effective results. Usually it is shown that microdermabrasion is the best option for stretch marks that are old and discolored. At this stage, since microdermabrasion acts like a sandblaster, the top layers of skin can be polished away allowing for new, younger skin to develop.

There are two other treatments that involve laser therapies. These laser therapies treat the stretch marks in different ways. First, an option is for a laser therapy that stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, thus eliminating the appearance of stretch marks. This is most effective on stretch marks that are new, but may still be an option for older ones as well.

The other laser treatment that is available involves stimulating the production of melatonin with a laser. When this procedure works, the skin is darkened to the color of the skin surrounding it, making the appearance less noticeable.

The use of over the counter tanning lotions is also an option. While stretch marks will not darken with exposure to the sun, the use of a tanning lotion will darken the area and make it less noticeable.

Finally, prevention of weight gain is the best way to hide from the possibility of stretch marks. Maintaining a diet that is low in fat and exercise is a great proactive approach. Most people are able to satisfy hunger cravings with protein shakes as well as appetite suppressants such as hoodia.
