Students look for Graduate Jobs

The underlying difficulty, again for the average sort of student who has perhaps always viewed the classical student social life as being just as important as the academic side of university life, is that a change of both image and outlook may now be needed when they start looking for graduate jobs. To be really successful in most such jobs it is usually important the neither their image nor their outlook are in conflict with the work that they hope to be doing. Indeed, if they are, they may well not get past the interview stage for the graduate jobs concerned.

For example, when seeking graduate jobs where a smart appearance is deemed essential, it could be a mistake to attend an interview dressed in "casual" student clothing. Or, as another example, when seeking graduate jobs where you would be dealing with people, and where it is deemed important to be alert and lively in the mornings, it could be a mistake to attend a late night party the night before the interview.

At the end of the day, however, it is for each to assess their own outlook and image, and take steps to change them if change is needed. Simple things like, if necessary, buying and getting used to wearing some smart "interview / working" clothes, or trying to cultivate the habit of sleeping during "normal" hours. And this, it will be noticed, would be a rather more permanent response than simply putting on an effort for graduate jobs interview days.

And so, on to job selection. In the "old days" the first port of call for new graduates looking for graduate jobs adverts would have been the newspapers and trade magazines, but nowadays the Internet jobs boards (jobs boards are specialised recruitment web-sites) are also rapidly making their mark. Both job-seekers and employers register their needs on these so-called jobs boards and each is notified by Email when suitable matches occur.

One of the advantages of jobs-boards is that, because of the way they operate, it is just as easy to apply for several graduate jobs as to apply for a single one. This in itself has several advantages, and it should help to create a not-too-stressed mental attitude towards the jobs / interviews. With luck it could give the applicant the chance to choose between several progressively developing opportunities, and reduce the interview stresses at the same time (since there will always be 'other irons in the fire').

And, finally, for those with the initiative to be pro-active in the jobs market, there is the speculative approach. Under this approach the graduate jobs seeker does not wait for suitable jobs to be advertised, but takes the initiative to approach suitable companies on the off-chance.

The first thing to do would be to identify suitable companies, i.e. companies that might well employ graduates, and that might well be able to use the skills that the applicant can offer. Start with the companies' web-sites, and then continue by any means available to find out as much as possible about the company. It would be particularly valuable to be able to determine the name and title of the person to whom the speculative approach should be directed (possibly, the head of HR?).

Then, a CV and exploratory letter would be needed, both written to professional standards. There are plenty of businesses offering support services to will help the preparation of such documents.

Then, a few days or possibly a week after posting it, a follow-up phone call, to that named person, will need to be made. The purport of the call being to check that the speculative graduate jobs letter had been sent to the correct person, to ask for the details to be kept on file against the possibility of there being any suitable graduate jobs vacancies in the future, and to offer any further info' that might be helpful.
