Switching to nurse advisor jobs

The massive forward steps in technology and the ever increasing competitive nature of the industry, has led to companies striving for greater profit margins, and the employment of salespeople. These sales people are responsible for selling pharmaceutical products to general practises and hospitals, and to support them, jobs have been created as nurse advisors.

Despite the sales tag, anybody employed in a medical sales position must have a medical background. This is not purely a marketing role; in fact it would be more suitable for a nurse to make the transition to medical sales, rather than a traditional marketing person to make the switch. There is both an element of sales and medical knowledge required for candidates to be suitable for the role.

A position in medical sales is a definite alternative to a career in nursing. I have spoke to numerous medical sales reps, who had started off as nurses, but became frustrated working in the NHS. They saw the opportunity to progress in medical sales and took their chance. In addition I have also spoken to numerous previous nurses who are now employed in nurse advisor jobs. They all seemed to like the idea of a career in medical sales, but wanted to still remain primarily in patient care, and lacked a little 'cut-throat' edge to be successful in sales.

There is no doubt that Medical Sales Jobs are less daunting for people who have previously worked as nurses. The time spent as a nurse gives an understanding of people's needs and provides much needed experience in motivating people who are in need of medical care. They are already well-equipped with anatomy skills and will be more than experienced in public relations.

Much like any sales role, people employed in medical sales (or indeed in nurse advisor jobs), must be well spoke, courteous, patient/customer orientated and be able to drive a hard bargain. If you are trying to cut a deal, any experienced businessperson will immediately try to latch on to your gentle side and nursing background, attempting to get the best deal for themselves. You need to be able to stand up for yourself and give as good as you get.

The sales side of the role will need the most attention; however a good sales technique can be learnt and developed. This would not prove to be too much of an obstacle to recruiters as they will be aware that a Nurses' background in health care will help them during any sales pitch to a potential customer.

Nurses currently working will also have a better chance of being employed either in medical sales or in nurse advisor jobs as they will have a good chance of meeting medical representatives. Therefore any advice could be much more easily sourced if you already work as a nurse.

In summary, any nurse thinking about a change direction might seriously consider medical sales or nurse advisor jobs. To succeed you need to develop communication skills, introduce yourself to existing reps and develop sales techniques.
