Symptoms of Pump Failure With Your Hot Tub Motors

As hot tubs age the hot tub motors and pumps tend to fail. Its a fact of life. When replacing the pump it is much smarter to replace the entire pump rather than just the motor. In the long run youll have a lot less grief.

There are a few symptoms that would indicate failure is occurring. If you hear a humming noise there is a good chance that a frozen shaft or frozen bearings are preventing the motor from turning. It may also be an impeller that has become jammed.

A whining noise could be an indication that bearings are worn. While a leak around the pump would indicate that a seal is failing.

If you are handy you could replace the worn out parts but you have to be careful that the parts dont actually land up costing more than a whole new pump. Sometimes replacing the whole motor and pump is not only more cost effective its a lot easier and then everything is new.

There are two main parts to any pump. The wet end moves the water and the dry end which is the electric motor. Motors can be either 115 volt or 230 volt and are sold in a variety of horsepowers.

Besides the two main parts there are gaskets, seals, housings, o-rings, drain plugs, and even an impeller. Any one or combination of these parts can fail.

Your pump will either have a center or side discharge. You will need to match the new pump with the existing pump. Side discharge pumps are 60% more efficient than the center pumps. If you decide to change styles youll have to make some modifications.

Spa pumps are usually 1.5 inches or 2 inches. This is not the outside dimension. Then there are brands like Hayward, Sta-Rite, or Jacuzzi which use non standard dimensions and fittings just to confuse the situation more.

If you are going to remove your old pump you will first need to locate the existing pump. Next you need to unplug it from the box. There may be valves that you have to deal with by closing them. Then loosen the unions at the suction and discharge ends and unbolt the pump carefully lifting it out of its position. Remove the cord as you will use it on the new pump.

Reconnect the new pump making sure that the connections are clean. A two speed pump will have a red, white, black, and green wire with the red being low speed and the black high speed.

To install the new pump youll just do the reverse of what you did to remove the old pump. After it is installed make sure you open the valves so that the pump is flooded and an air lock cannot develop. Now you can turn the power back on and start the spa.

If you are seeing symptoms of pump failure its time to start shopping online for quality hot tub motors and pumps at a great price.
