Tablet PCs in the Healthcare and Insurance Industries
|
The healthcare industry in particular has seen tremendous benefits from the use of handheld tablet PCs. One of the major advantages is the facts that healthcare professionals can now actually carry patient records from bedside to bedside in a secure and confidential nature. This means that not only is timely access to critical information available, but time is also saved because trips to retrieve files are eliminated. These advantages have translated into huge savings costs across the board. One of the ways in which healthcare organizations are saving money with the utilization of tablet PCs is the fact that data can be entered into a patient's file immediately rather than later. Digital pens and software that converts handwritten text into typed text make this possible. Such moves have significantly reduced administrative overhead costs. Other cost saving factors include reduced errors. Since information only has to be entered once, instead of transcribed from handwritten notes; the chance of error has significantly dropped. Not only does this mean that repetitive work for correcting errors is eliminated, but it also translates to better patient care. Whenever there is less risk of error involved, patients can depend on a better quality of care and healthcare organizations can reduce costs associated with medical error. Furthermore, to date; there has been little to no risk associated with conversion errors of handwritten text to typed text. Customer satisfaction is also on the rise since the implementation of tablet PCs in several healthcare organizations. Patients no longer need to experience lengthy wait times; a fact that has everyone smiling. The move to electronic patient records via tablet PCs also means a safer and cleaner working environment. Previously, hospital and medical environments were swamped with cords and wires; however, wireless communication devices such as tablet PCs have put those days to an end. Now, instant transfers from one department to the next and patient information can be conducted anywhere in the facility without the need for dangerous extraneous devices. Depending on the system they choose, healthcare organizations can also use tablet PCs for communication purposes. This is ideal because cellular phones typically cannot be used in a healthcare environment. A 24GHz spread spectrum technology is perfectly safe to use; however and is now making is quick and easy for healthcare workers to communicate with one another from anywhere in a hospital. Voice over technology provides further cost savings for administrators because no charge is incurred for the communication. In the insurance industry, workers are finding that tablet PCs are a tremendous advantage as well. Claims can be entered and processed on the spot, which dramatically cuts down on the amount of overtime required to enter data. This translates to a savings of administrative overhead. When the ability to print checks directly in the field is combined with the already numerous advantages of tablet PCs; customer service also increases. This is especially true in light of natural disasters, when it's imperative that consumers receive the funds they need to get on with their lives as quickly as possible. Overall, the response to the implementation of tablet PCs in both industries has been very warm. Workers like the fact that they can save data entry time with tablet PCs as well as reduce the amount of traveling and walking that was previously required to obtain necessary data. For administrators, the savings cost and increase in customer service make the move well worth it. About The Author: Jason Petrina is the Editor and Publisher of Article Click.
